Your an idiot, a Catera? Those have not been in production since 2000. I will agree the Catera was junk but I see alot of old buy here pay here cars broken down, all makes and models. Use some real examples of you car expertise that you beleive you have or should I say being a follower of what you read and hear in the mainstream media. If your the same anonymous whom said GM will never get my business then you must have a strong hatred for anything manufatured in the country that gives you the right to give your biased liberal opinions. You have probably not even owned a new car yet nor could afford one.

the substantial 2.2 million recalls is nothing to be minimized, but you do have to realize that in order to save costs, manufacturers share components across many vehicles. also its magnified by the amount of cars they sell.

The kink in Toyota’s armor is appearing. There have been a significant number of recalls during 2006(nearly 3,000,000 YTD…and counting as 30,000 more just announced in the Chineese market), new products will be delayed as detailed on this site, and Toyota has consistently scored lower the likes of Cadillac and Buick on JD Power’s quality and customer satisfaction surveys. Opinion aside…..these are just the facts Ma’am! Toyota may just pass GM as the #1 auto maker, however, they may also earn the coveted title as the “Most Frequently Recalled Brand”

Yes, this is the right thing to do.

But when Ford does the SAME THING (eg. F-350, B-segment car), they get bashed by so many on this site.

When Toyota does it, they get praised and respected more.

Thank you Robert. These guys are all coming up with negative reasons why Toyota did this and they all missed the #1 reason for the Toyota Way, that is to make more $. You don’t see it now, but later their decision will most likely save their ass from major problems that costs mucho $.

Domestic nameplates like GM will never get my business no matter how wonderful they think they are becoming. The gap in quality between a GM and a Toyota still exists and GM service blows… BIG TIME.

Toyota did the right thing here, and it’s actually not dissimilar to what Ford and Nissan have been stressing recently. Say what you want about domestic vs. foreign nameplates, but the truth is, there isn’t that much difference these days in terms of build quality (design quality being a separate and more qualitative issue). The real issue for Toyota was probably: how much will it cost (recalls, lost sales, warranty coverage) to have broken products on the market? The answer as GM, Ford and Chrysler have found out over the last 15 years is too much.

They needed to do this. The Avalon launch was a mess. The Rav4 launch has been very problematic. The Camry launch has not been without problems. The Tundra has been delayed possibly to solve last minute problems… so obviously it’s a good thing.

But Toyota isn’t the only one to do this. Nissan put some soft breaks to check up on some of its products coming out this year and next because of recent quality problems. Ford delayed the SuperDuty by a few months, possibly for quality reasons and had a solid launch of its Fusion, which was slow to start and ramp up production to monitor quality. Sometimes, it pays to be prudent and driven by product completeness rather than a need to sell more vehicles. Let’s just hope that GM is not on track to repeat its woes with its new rushed-to-market pick-ups.

The Pontiac Vibe is a rebadged Toyota Voltz.

And that tells you (point blank) they make higher quality cars, yet I don’t feel that way for all their lineup. Toyota isn’t living up to it’s “quality” image so far, and every year have just been having more and more problems. What does 2.2 million recalls in one year tell you? They are no worse (not financially) then GM. Only ones to have old macpherson struts on all their sedans, this is because? They don’t care to much about the customer, just the profit. Of course they’ll never see the benefit of an independant suspension, and thats why Toyota is so smart. They invest money into things that the customer will see and feel, not something that they will never benefit from.
IF this was GM you would all be screaming FOUL.

I’d still buy Toyota’s worse product over GM’s best. Because GM’s best product, the Pontiac Vibe is actually a Toyota…so what does that tell you?

i guess we see this differently then. You see it as not enough resources, i see it as enough resources to make sure it IS done right the 1st time so there are no recalls. Toyota could just send the cars out and hope there aren’t to many problems. And people WILL buy them, so they are deff losing money. Toyota see the recalls and they don’t want it to happen again. I wish I could say the same for GM who tends to just cover up any quality issues with an incentive plan. If you think Toyota is a on its last leg then what limb does GM have left?

This is too funny… is Rove pulling the strings at Toyota?

We do not have sufficient staffing or any quality controls in place at our US plants, so rather than delays to get the plants up to pace, we are going to say that our delays are ‘customer focused’.

Toyota is falling, fast. They’re products are crap, they’ve become the recall King of the World, warranty costs are out of control, and they have to delay products because they don’t have enough resources to get it right the first time. They no longer are the brightest or the best. The truth hurts, but it has to be spoken. Toyota’s bright star now just burns with an average glow.

Why should GM have to admit past faults? Why should they have to own up and fix past quality issues?

There’s always “Road to Redemption” Campaigns to get buyers back.

^^agreed. GM and Ford are in a death spiral. they dont have the funds to build a awesome car because the cars they sell are not so good so nobody buys them so they dont have money to upgrade and it goes on and on. Congrats Toyota, you have earned alot of resepct for this move.

thats the point! they see these recalls and they are biting it in the ass. NO WAY would GM or any other company do this. it makes me resepct Toyota alot, they see there is a problem and instead of ignoring it they are dealing with it. GM is bragging about getting the new chevy/gmc trucks out the door early, i cant wait until the recalls start on them (and they will have recalls) For a company as large as Toyota to say “Hey give me some more time i gotta get this right” is saying alot about the whole ideals of the company

i guess everyone complaining about Toyotas quality falling should just keep quite now. they realize there are problems and they are taking care of it. I bet if anyone at GM made this suggestion they would get laughed at, as evident by rushing the new chevy/gmc trucks out ahead of schedule.
