If they give the hybrid the Celica name it will more than likely sell good. That concept up-top is ugly.

[...] Toyota executives told Dow Jones Newswires Monday. And a new hybrid model will be at the center of that movement, the sources said. The new model is “going to be global project, not one aimed at one region more than another. The concept is a hybrid,” said Tokuo Fukuichi, the head of Toyota’s ED2 design center. “We made a proposal to head office for a hybrid sports car. We’re not sure that we’re going to proceed with that but every time we develop a new car we consider a hybrid system. We have limited resources,” he said. Fukuichi said Toyota has received a high volume of request for a sports car from dealers and customers. He said such a car would have to be affordable but also offer a lot of advanced technology. He said the target will be young, affluent buyers. More [...]

Thing2 I KNOW what a hybrid is, as well as what fuel cells are. I'm not referring to triflex engines either, I'm referring to the fact that a fuel cell based vehicle (at least the very first ones) will need a hybrid component (fuel stack + batteries) or at least a similar system to store energy and to start.
And thats how Toyota has developed its Fuel cell vehicels and BMW too if i'm not mistaken

This is old news, I heard the next MR2 was going to be a hybrid at least a year ago, I'm curious to see if they can keep the weight down enough to make it as fun a drive as the MR2-S is. Toyota has the funds to make it work, and I wouldn't hold myself from buying a GM car due to #5 alone; actually I'd never have bought one anyways.

"Toyota can't even build a normal sports car like a Camaro so this is a joke. Just buy a Pontiac Solstice if you want a real sports car"

HAHA! Nice one. Remember the Supra? Better than the Camaro was. Toyota built the better sports car.

And by the way, if you consider a Pontiac Solstice to be a real sports car, you really need to learn more about cars.

Dre, learn what a hybrid is first...

A hybrid engine as we know it is a misnomer for a gas engine that powers the electric component which is then rarely used in slow speed driving.
What you may be refering to are the triflex engines that are not hybrids because they don't use one fuel to power another energy source as the current definition stands. Rather these engines which ford has made to run on Hydrogen, Gas, and/or Ethanol will run on just one of the sources at a time, and will help ease the market from totally gas to multiple sources of energy.

Toyota's gone too far in trying to expand all of its cars to hybrids. Toyota can NOT make a real sports car, and no die-hard car fan appreciates hybrids to their full extent. Hybrids are a fad. After all, they use gas, do they not? The solution lies in alternative fuels.

the concept in that picture has some brilliant features from a pure design as well as R&D standpoint. The seats fold forward and the backs of them form a protective shell over the interior, so you can lock things up much like a safe since there is no glass to break. Just one small feature that is pretty cool. You can love or hate the overall design of it, but when companies push the envelope they dont always taste success, but at least they try. Other companies have to resort to making cars they made 30years ago since they are unable to come up with anything that motivates consumers. and you cant blame the designers, i know many designers for chrysler, FoMoCo and ford, they are just as talented if not more than their japanese and european counterparts. GM actually employs the most designers of any company, and yet they still come up with #%$@#. It's the old horses that nobody refused to take out back and shoot sitting in the boardrooms that are the reason.

Yep never going to buy a GM car unless it's a classic chevelle which is unlikely. 13. is right and the sport car is 4 seater convertable prollie more a a GT grand tourer kinda thing. I'll be first in the line for it I'm hoping it's cheap even though the article says Toyota is targeting afluent.

Ahk-Med, you're right. I just think it's ignorant to presuppose that just cause toyota needs a vehicle in that segment that it is automatically purposed to be a car for ricers. It's safe to say there are lots of people wanting a compact sports car, but maybe get turned off when they see how cheap some ricer can make one look. All because the ricer wants his to be different even though every other ricer has the same stuff. There is a large market out there who just want a small fast car that they dont have to strap a tin can on the back to be cool.

You know think!, I really liked your GROG post the other week, but this time I think you are just ranting like an idiot. The article does say they are working on a "sports" car, and if you have any reading comprehension skills, you can infer that it will likely be a compact.

"The sports car will come, but I don't know exactly when. Since we stopped production of the Celica and the MR2, there's a gap in that end of our range where we don't get the full impact of our participation in Formula 1," he said."

Notice he didn't mention the Supra, which I agree is a great car and a great drive. However, my point remains a hybrid sport compact won't wow the sport compact crowd.

Why the hate on the ricer crowd? Are they not entitled to their fun? In that sense, you are the GROG that you so despse. Their idea of fun is no different than lift and mudders truck/suv crowd or the high displacement drag crowd. Get over yourself.

i was just waiting for one of you tools to demonstrate you know nothing about the automotive industry. the car pictured is purely a concept car toyota put out (it's actually quite old as far as concepts go)... never had intention of building it, and obviously, as the much smarter people who run this blog have decided, would work well for a visual image to a story that is basically word based. What your small brains have done, which i suspect is common, is saw something, and forgot what you read. READING would be the key factor in this particular story, with the picture being a bit of flash.

i was just waiting for one of you tools to demonstrate you know nothing about the automotive industry. the car pictured is purely a concept car toyota put out (it’s actually quite old as far as concepts go)… never had intention of building it, and obviously, as the much smarter people who run this blog have decided, would work well for a visual image to a story that is basically word based. What your small brains have done, which i suspect is common, is saw something, and forgot what you read. READING would be the key factor in this particular story, with the picture being a bit of flash.

#5 and other ricers... i dont recall this article stating that toyota was making a "sport compact car" i guess you're unable to tell the difference between a real sports car and a econobox posing as a sports car. Toyota has in it's heritage one of the greatest sports cars ever, a little ride called the supra, maybe you've heard of it. And the definition of sports car doesnt include "must be able to be modded" AND because i know the only way you understand how to mod a car is bolt something on, i suggest you read how people have been able to mod the current Prius by just altering the computer... over 100mpg, over 200hp, modding doesnt just have to be bolting a shitty coffee can to the back, putting stickers on it, and a wing that you over paid for and wasnt wind tunnel tested so it offers no help and just adds weight. Welcome to the year 2006, when you wake up, you might be able to get over your fears of something new. GROGs

Toyota never reall captured the sport compact market in SoCal, that niche has almost exclusively belonged to Honda. Therefore, I'm not suprised with the loss of the MR2 and Celica. I think a sporty hybrid coupe would appeal to the same people that like the Prius, not the sport compact scene.

Toyota can't even build a normal sports car like a Camaro so this is a joke. Just buy a Pontiac Solstice if you want a real sports car
