WHile i dont approve at all, i dont think the same thing that happened to chrysler would even come into pl;ay here, Chrysley was already on a downhill slide with they had that tie up with Daimler, and consequently left the tie up in worse shape than they started, mminus the blessed of the new 300 and at the time the slow selling(but amazing) crossfire. Toyota on the other hand is in well standing, and i think they are smart enough to not let daimler get their hands too far into the pot. and Aggie, i agree with cino, if the supra were to come back benz should have NOTHING to do with the equation, toyota made a completely capable supra back in the day they can do it again should they see fir without the help of anyone else

idrinorbarsaku I Agree. Toyota has the Quality and the electronics to upgrade Mercedes in that respect, and Mercedes Benz has the Engineering Mechanicals to upgrade the Performance of the Japanese. However I think their is some little Nuances of Toyota’s Mechanicals that are better than MB’s and maybe their are some benefits the German Electronics aka Siemens etc, and other german Semiconductor companies and alike that have over Japanese electronics. Calls for a cross reference and learn the advantages of both!

ZL-1 you got that Wrong. There is no electric with really a Range over 30 to barely 40 miles like the Volt a GM joke for an electric. Yet Ford Motor has promise one with at least about a 100 Mile range.
And no sir you obviously have’nt heard but Tesla does have the S Sedan coming and its promised to have a 300 Mile Range unheard of in an Electric Vehicle! So what’s that you were saying!?

hey funktard NMOFGM – most of the people I know are afraid to buy a used GM vehicle with more than 100k on them because they almost certain to have to do major repairs. I know tons of people who buy used Camry’s with 80-100k miles, put just the basic maintenance into them, then drive them for another 100-200k miles. I worked with one guy who always bought his Camry’s with 100-150k, did the maintenace and got them up to 300-400k miles without problems. When’s the last time you heard someone having that bit of luck with an Impala or Grand Prix?

hey funktard NMOFGM, companies dont form an aliiance just so their names can sleep in bed with each other! They form a joint or alliance so they can help each other out. If this was to go through, you can count on mercedes’ quality going up in the next years and toyota’s/lexus’ performance going up along with over all quality. Two companies don’t join to make each other worse as you mentioned dumb A$$!! Even Chrysler got a lot of help from daimler even though most people don’t even know.

I think this is a move in which both companies can benefit. Whether or not one company is pulling something to leave the other company in the dry is unknown though

Toyotas pisspoor quality and Daimlers miserable reliability should make for a great relationship. Which would be worse, a Camry that lasts 50 thousand miles and fails becuase of Toyotas engines or because of Mercedes electricals? This is great news for General Motors because the competition will build even worse vehicles than they already do.

Keep in mind
Chrysler used the current M-Class architecture as a benchmark for improvement for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee
And the megahit Chrysler 300 was about 40% Mercedes parts/engineering
Don’t expect a merger, or a NUMMI, anytime soon.
But this is a story worthy following!

no ZL-1 youre right. GM left NUMMI because they killed pontiac (sadly) and NUMMI currently built the Matrix/Vibe and GM couldnt decide on any other vehicle to produce at the plant.

Perhaps my memory is a bit rusty or I didn’t pay much attention to the alliance, but I thought GM was the first to walk out. Much like how they were so eager to get rid of their contract with Fiat a few years ago. Reason for Fiat was clear to me-they weren’t profitable at that time, GM’s confidence in Fiat’s turnaround had waned by what…2004? Reason for GM leaving Toyota, not so much.

After seeing the state Daimler left Chrysler in, I think Toyota would do better to keep its cards well away from them. I think they won’t be looking out for Toyota’s best interest.

And I’m sorry to say but Tesla is far from the best. Ambitious, yes, but not best. When you build an electric car with a recharge time of 16 hours(excluding what Top Gear found out about their poor range), you doing much worse than the EV1 nearly 15 years ago, which offered a 2 hour quick charge. Batteries just are miles behind what a diesel can do as far as fuel economy right now, but thats besides this topic.

This is a big mistake in my opinion….Lexus LS sharing with Merc S, ???? i mean dont they compete with each other now… i would buy a LS430 -450 etc over an S class merc anyday…5 years down the track the lexus will need nothing, the merc will need trading in..lol

Toyota already supplying engines to BMW. 1.6L diesel in Mini is Toyota sourced. I think Benz needs it more then Toyota: A and B class are not selling to make economic sense, but they have to sell those to achieve average fleet fuel mileage. EU & US are getting somewhat similar to fuel reduction approach.
