The cost of building an engine for the redesigned Toyota Camry — which goes on sale in March — will be about $1,000, half the cost of an engine for the previous generation of Camrys, says Gary Convis, executive vice president for North American manufacturing. “The auto industry has typically not been one of high margins,” says Wendy Trevisani, who helps manage 3.2 million Toyota shares for Thornburg Investment Management in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “Toyota has been able to buck the trend by being innovative and focusing on costs,” Trevisani said. “Toyota is already one of the most-efficient producers,” says Dan Luria, an analyst at the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center in Plymouth, Michigan. “If they can improve this much, that spells big trouble for everybody else.”
