Toyota cuts Prius price to compete with Insight

04/21/2009, 9:48 AM

By Andrew Ganz

As we reported a few weeks ago, Toyota is expected to announce a price cut for its all-new Prius hybrid to allow it to better compete with the lower-price Honda Insight. According to a source within Toyota’s United States operations, the 2010 Prius will retail for $21,000 – a full $1,000 lower than the outgoing model despite increased efficiency and content.

Toyota is expected to officially announce pricing tomorrow, according to Bloomberg.

The Prius will still cost more than the Insight, which starts at $19,800, but the Prius comes with more standard features and also offers higher fuel efficiency – 50 mpg combined, versus 41 mpg for the Honda.

Toyota has not confirmed whether it will cut the price of the existing Prius, which will continue to be sold in Japan. The Japanese automaker is still expected to introduce a low-price Prius variant in the future.

Good for you Toyota. You’ve just managed to reward all your previous Prius customers by devaluing their resale value. Funny how the game changes when you’re not the only player.

Smart move Toyota! I don’t think this will hurt them johnny. The product is too good. It’s the best hybrid out there right now and has had good reliability so far. Toyota is only protecting their market share.

The Prius must have gotten the disease from you A4

Anyway The only competition that the pruis has is from Honda Honda and Toyota again. I think Hyundai needs to get in this game. GM will get in the game in 2015 with the Volt lol

Its a good move by Toyota but I must say compared to the Pruis the new Insight wasnt that impressive. I needs a little more room and some more features

Johnny,

You hit the nail on the head. This is going to greatly lower the resale on their used cars. Just imagine if you were one of the suckers who paid $1500 over sticker last year when gas was 4 bucks a gallon and want to trade next yr. Have fun with that. Although if they continue to put rebates on all their new stuff its not going to be any different for all their car lines. But the sheep will continue to buy because toyotas run on sunshine and actually put ozone back into the environemt according to half the people on this site.

it just looks like they bubbled up the front end and sharpened up the rear, If GM made an Aztek hybrid id probably buy that first. and yes, it caught it from me.

and i drive a ford focus, boring cheap and safe……..
