When 2008 model year cars were required to post fuel-mileage based on new government testing earlier this month, economy ratings dropped across the board. However, hybrids suffered the most under the new “real-world” testing — most hybrids saw a 20% decrease in fuel mileage.
Before the new regulations, the most popular hybrid in America — the Toyota Prius — advertised fuel economy of 60 mpg city and 51 highway. After the 2008 rating system, mileage dropped to 48/45 mpg city/highway — much closer to real-world results. But many Toyota dealers are still using the pre-2008 mileage figures.
CNW Marketing Research took a survey of 200 Toyota dealerships around the country and found that about 33% are still claiming that the Prius can achieve 60 mpg — many making the claim in radio or TV ads. “It’s underhanded and deceptive,” said Art Spinella, general manager of CNW Marketing Research. “Toyota isn’t doing it. The ads aren’t in newspapers where you can cut them out and have proof they did wrong. The ads are usually on radio or TV where you don’t have a copy, so that if anyone complains all the dealer has to do is stop running the ad for a while.”
Consumers haven’t been complaining about the ad claims — largely due to the fact that consumers aren’t aware that ratings have changed yet — but many dealers using the 48/45 ratings have, calling either local dealer trade associations or their state attorney general’s office to complain and force dealers to use the new rating system.
Toyota has yet to comment on the subject.

What do you expect from a car dealer? GM-sales you tell them!
Actually 2008 estimates are optimistic for Prius as well. I heard from folks in Wisconsin it does not get any better then 24 mpg during winter.

Some of you have seen my fuel economy comparison charts. I’ve used it to prove how worthless hybrids are. I’ve adjusted the numbers now to reflect the new fuel economy standards. If I compare a Cobalt Sedan to a Prius, even comparably equipped (minus that Prius nav-like screen), it will take the Prius owner at least seven years to payoff the vehicle, just in fuel mileage, if gas is $2.89/gallon and the owner drives 15,000 miles per year. If the owner drives 10,000 miles per year, it will take over 10 years.

I think Toyota is only the secondary evil here. Sort of like, second-hand smoke evil.
The article discusses the actions of the Toyota dealers, not Toyota the company. The dealers are all independent contractors–Toyota has no control over what they do–and the dealers are the ones advertising the pre-2008 mileage figures on tv and radio.
Having said that, are we really suprised that car dealers will bend, or break, the rules of legitimate business practices to make a buck? No, add this to the long list of bull**** you can’t believe from a car salesman.
When and if Toyota comments, they’ll say that the dealers are provided with the current mileage info., and they have no control over what the dealers do with it. The upshot? Toyota the company will not go out of its way to correct a practice that might net them a few additional Prius sales, especially since Prius sales are down as it is.

Is it possible that many of these dealers have 2007 Priuses to sell? Those, under the EPA do achieve 60mpg. If the ratings had increased, rather than decrease, from 2007 to 2008 and dealers were advertising 2007 ratings, it would be just as deceptive. Having an uninformed opinion or a misperception (as some of you display) isn’t an end all of an argument.

Bryce – the 2007 and 2008 prius get the same mileage because no major changed were made to the car that would make it more fuel efficient from 2007 to 2008. Although the ratings are “different” that is only because of the real-world system that the EPA implemented. If anything, Toyota should apologize for overstating their Prius in 2007 and the years before that rather than market the 2007 as a 60 MPG car.

Commodore,
I understand that. But we’re (dealers) required to post mileage ratings on the vehicles. This is NOT to any benefit of ours. If Toyota dealers have 2007 models that are rated higher than 2008 models, why not advertise the 2007 models? It’s not any more deceitful than the EPA adjusting their ratings. By the same token, the EPA should be receiving just as much, if not more, flak for the inflated numbers. Some might say that those environmentalists were glorifying their staple ‘eco-friendly’ car. I wouldn’t, but it’s a very simple transition in comparison to the statements being made about Toyota dealerships.

My thoughts are a combination of what Bryce said, and scarface.
Everyone saying screw Toyota is only half minded. I’m guessing alot of you nine year olds are just going along with the conversation, making up names like “foreigncarssuck” for people to agree with you and feel importance. Well, listen for a second. Alot of what the Japanese manufacturer are good, I’m not necessarily talking about Toyota but look at Nissan! They have such an amazing design layup, it’s sleek, handsome looking and sells nicely.
It just upsets me when people praise something that is inferior or on par with products that are coming from their own country! There’s nothing wrong with patriotism, but I’ve been seeing alot of anti-patrism lately, I suppose it’s a trend, and partly because the times are changing. But patriotism has little to do with it, I just wanted to mention that because I know the next argument that will come out is probably “just because it’s made in America doesn’t mean it’s good”; I’ll tell you now, go screw yourself!
On the other hand, it’s shady for dealers to post older figures, but it’s not a car manufacturered in 2007; I’m a little blurred on this concept, but does that mean that they can post 2006 figures? If they can, like I mentioned it’s shady, but still legal.
I know my local Ford dealer has still been advertising slightly older figures, on models manufacturered then. Just because it seems this new editor likes to agree or make a case with LLN readers, I’d like to see a simple update, if possible of other figures, if those figures exist (I’m sure they do).

Absolutely it is deceitful – you (the dealers) are using numbers that you KNOW are inaccurate in order to promote your vehicles. And it’s not just the info sheets you put on the cars – it’s the commercials, everything. EPA is not deceitful, if anything, they were trying to set the record straight and you should do the same. Oh and yes, it is to your benefit to have a 60 MPG car rather than a 45 MPG car.
What’s next, Prius commercials advertising the 2007 model and its fuel efficiency when you got 2008s? Or, 2008 models being advertised as 60 MPG cars and then in the bottom you can put little, white, unreadable text that says “*estimates for 2007 model year”..

So this is what Toyota dealers have resorted to just to move some product? This, in addition to their misleading Tundra ads, is telling. I’ve said it before, Toyotas used to sell on reputation and loyalty alone.
If this had been a domestic brand’s dealers, say Saturn, doing this with their hybrid Vue, the insults would be blunt. 1115 would be using it as ‘fact’ that imports are superior.

If we are actually having a constructive discussion comparing the advantages of each models, I’d agree. Most of the posts so far in this site has been a single sentence bashing whatever brand they have a vendetta on. Your definition of “inferior” doesn’t hold true for others. There is really no standard for measuring whether one vehicle is better than others except for real world ownership of multiple vehicles.

Once you factor in the fact that these “earth-friendly” vehicles are built from raw materials shipped from America to Japan in very large cargo ships (that are not hybrids I think???), then built and shipped back the same way, it loses a lot of its environmental appeal. You want to help the planet? Buy American!
Also factor in a battery that will do god knows what damage in a landfill ten years from now and the fact that these cars aren’t as fuel efficient as first thought, and you have no reason not to drive a Hummer. At least then you can enjoy the ride and not be seen driving around town in a roller skate that will endanger your entire family to supposedly save a dollar. A dollar that will not be realized for ten years since you over paid for that Prius piece of sh|t!
So, let me see if I have this right Toyota. You don’t save money on gas, and you don’t save the planet, and you drive a car with a horrible driving experience that puts your families life in danger. That’s a lose, lose, lose situation. Oh, what a feeling! Brilliant! Look on the bright side, at least you’re taking jobs away from your fellow Americans, right? You patriot you.
Every time I see a Prius on the road I have to check out the driver, and it’s almost always a 50-year-old America hating hippie community college professor. Yep, there’s the Hillary Clinton bumper sticker, and there’s the Florida Community College of Jacksonville parking decal. Sad!!!! I always give them a quick friendly horn honk, wave from my big gas hog of a Cadillac STS, and punch the gas. What they save in fuel I make a point of burning, just out of spite.
Besides, Prius is Greek for “Sanctomonious Pompous Ass” I hear.

First off… anyone who actually believes those window stickers are a ****ing fool… but then again anyone who buys a prius is a bigger ****ing fool.
Manufacturers do have a lot ways to control their dealers… but it comes as no surprise that they will still allow those over-inflated figures to still be posted. Toyota is becoming a much more “evil empire” than GM ever was… again their reluctance to slightly tarnish the “awesomeness” of their little hybrid weedwacker is no surprise.
The thing that still gets me the most is how some people think they’re actually helping the environment by driving a prius… they’re all a bunch of ****ing tools and Toyota loves them for it.
Needless to say… it’s about time to start levying a hefty tariff on japanese cars… actually it’s long overdue. What’s fair is fair… they do it to us so why the hell not. Plus any hit to their economy that would cause would be a small price to pay for their years of constant manipulation on the yen.
