Toyota, EDF team up to evaluate European plug-in hybrids

09/05/2007, 2:38 PM

By Drew Johnson

Toyota has announced that it will be working with Electricite de France SA (EDF) to “evaluate Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles in Europe.” Toyota partnered with EDF not to develop plug-in hybrids vehicles but rather to work on the charging infrastructure for France, which could then be extended to other European countries. EDF will also receive a small number of plug-in hybrids for its fleet, further testing the real-world viability of the plug-in hybrid.

EDF is the is the leading electricity producer in Europe and is active in all business aspects of electricity: production, transport, distribution, energy supply and trading. Toyota has sold over 100,000 hybrids in Europe.

‘American’ concept cars that never get built? I think we americans built as many of our concept cars as anyone else. Watch how the Camaro and Volt concepts will go on sale in a year or two.

I’d bet good money the volt will be produced.

Toyota is feeling the pinch obviously by it, since they are whining that li ion batteries are dangerous since they weren’t able to bring them to market before GM.

Very interesting: Toyota sold 100K hybrids and much more diesels in Europe. I don’t believe hybrid is a success in Europe. There much more of them sold in states and Japan, where diesels are simply not available. I am all for hybrids and Europe actually needs them more then we are in States (their congested cities are apocalypse now), but the cost of hybrid technology is killing them. Also, the electricity in Europe is much more expensive then in States.

The Volt WILL get produced. GM is not Ford

What – we’re supposed to listen to a biased idiot like you as to whether a certain car will be produced or not?
