Leftlane has already reported that Toyota was expected to expand its latest recall to other world markets, including China and Europe, and now the recall is official. Toyota Europe announced that it will be recalling eight models totaling 1.8 million vehicles due to faulty accelerator pedals.
In the U.S. recall, Toyota also recalled eight models, but the stateside recall involved a total of 2.3 million vehicles and is not to be confused with the eight model, 1.8 million vehicle recall just issued for the European market.
In Europe, the models being named in the recall include the Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corlla, iQ, RAV4, Verso and Yaris – for a grand total of 1.8 million vehicles.
What makes the European recall particularly interesting is the fact that Toyota said it has not been using the supplier that was blamed for the U.S. recall, CTS. Toyota explained that the reason it had not recalled any Scion or Lexus models was due to the use of a different supplier, Denso, for all manufacturing done in Japan. However, the European models are in some cases coming from Japanese Toyota plants – indicating with certainty that they would not contain CTS-sourced pedal assemblies, and suggesting that Denso-sourced pedals may too be faulty.
If it turns out that Denso-sourced production is also faulty, there is a possibility for the U.S. recall to be expanded to include Toyota, Lexus and/or Scion models with Denso assemblies.
Also unique from the U.S. recall is the fact that Toyota Europe said it will not be stopping production of vehicles for its recall. Toyota says that replacement parts are already available and being utilized in the plants producing the European models.
