Toyota has notified its dealer network that it will once again be extending the warranty for the 2000-2003 Tundra over a known problem with extensively rusty frames. The program has now been extended through April 2012.

Following an investigation by NHTSA in October 2009 which was sparked by numerous customer complaints, Toyota issued a regional recall that covered 110,000 2000-2003 Toyota Tundras.

Now, Tundra Headquarters has obtained a copy of the letter sent by Toyota corporate to its dealer network which outlines the expansion of the recall which originally gave very limited coverage to rusted Tundra frames. The original recall was centered around covering only three rear crossmembers, which had been rusting to the point of complete failure, with over 20 reports of the spare tire falling completely off of the trucks while driving.

Toyota Tundra rusty frame recall expanded and extended
Now, based on the images created by Tundra Headquarters – which are shown in the gallery below – the recall will be expanded to cover the majority of the frame, in addition to expanding nationwide. The documentation sent to Toyota dealers outlines that in order for the vehicle to qualify, the rust must causes holes in the frame that are at least 10 millimeters in diameter. The truck must also be in “otherwise good condition to qualify for a free frame replacement. Trucks with severe body damage, non-functional powertrains, and salvage vehicles are not eligible for this program,” according to Tundra Headquarters.

Solution
In the event that the frame is found to qualify, Toyota will replace the entire frame and provide a rental car free of charge as late as April, 2012. The repair is expected to take 4-5 days as the entire cab and bed will need to be removed from the frame, along with the entire suspension, brake lines and wiring. Toyota also expects the frame to take 1-2 weeks to arrive after the dealer places the order.
