Toyota officially took the wraps off its Tokyo-bound FT-86 Concept earlier this month, but our spy photographers have just nabbed the first spy shots of the two-door at Germany’s Nurburgring. Clearly in the mule phase, the production version of the car is little more than a cobbled together unit at this point.
Details surrounding the FT-86 (”86″ pronounced “hachi roku”) are still scarce, but the concept appears to be the result of the long-rumored joint-venture between Toyota and Subaru. Thanks to that connection, the FT-86 employs a 2.0L boxer engine of unspecified power, driving the rear-wheels.
Toyota didn’t reveal the FT-86’s curb weight, but says the two-door uses a light body and low center of gravity to ensure “racecar-like handling”. At just under 164 inches in length, the concept is nearly a foot and a half shorter than a Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe.
Japanese production of the 2+2 is expected to start in late 2011. U.S. sales have yet to be confirmed but are expected. Look for more details on the FT-86 to emerge after the car’s Tokyo Motor Show debut in just a few days.

I don’t like it at all, it’s ugly… And are they really going to call it the FT-86? Or will they have a different name over here? At least it’s RWD…
So sad that Toyota has to go to Subaru to get a sporty car… The company that used to make Supras died a looong time ago.

i don’t think the concept is ugly, it’s pleasantly surprising to see something sporty out of toyota (or subie for that matter)…you’d be mistaken to think the spy shots on the ‘ring represent the real body of the car…

The biggest problem with these little tin can jap cars is there they leave no room for tow hooks or clearance to get them up on the flatbeds when they are broken down on the side of the road. Even if they did, once you tuug on the tow hook, the car breaks in half because it has zero structural strength. All the duct tape and glue joints snap once you put any torque on them.
FAIL.

I’ll say this for it: by the axle to dash ratio it’s definitely a RWD mule and that’s all that really matters, well, almost;-) The more RWD Coupes the better, except for RWD sport sedans, anything less is just an appliance. If it ends up looking similar to the concept Toyobaru has winner. The concept has better lines than a 370.

I’ll say it again… take a look at the condition of many last gen Celicas and also what clean, unmolested examples are fetching on the previously enjoyed car market. This is going to be the Japanese equivalent of the Camaro when it finally makes production. Is it going to be everyone’s cup of tea? Of course not… what is? But just like the Camaro there are a lot of people who have been waiting a very long time for Toyota to re-enter this segment of the market. And if the decision to finally go ahead with this project came from Mr. Toyoda- and you have to believe it was since we didn’t hear a lot about it prior to his appointment- then just maybe he’s a man of his word after all.

Eclipse, 3000GT, 300ZX 2+2, 240SX, Supra, Probe, Miata, Cougar(last gen), M3…….. The 90’s were truly the golden age of the sports coupe. MR-2, RS-7, Boxster, 300ZX…… It wasn’t a bad decade for sports cars, either.

I see a lot of fanboys liking Supras here… but… fact:
1. Supra was never a great car to drive. Was an impressive car, a fast acclerating car, but tailed the handling of NSX, RX7 and Porsches.
2. Supra was a huge financial failiure for Toyota. It did not sell, and was died off. It gathered more popularity after it was discontinued. Especially after that Vin Diesel movie. Yeah, it was always considered as a bruiser by the aftermarket junkies, but again, they only made up for a tiny portion of the real market.

I’m not a Supra fan, and who cares if it wasn’t the hottest car in its segment at the time? That’s not the point. You’re nitpicking… The point was the SPIRIT that a vehicle like the Supra, or the Celica, or the MR2 embodied. A spirit that Toyota replaced with the Prius.

As awkward as this car looks in photos, its sounds to be promising. Boxer engines are really nice. they also provide a sound that cannot be replicated by any other 4 banger. Its about time that they finally use their own superb engines in their own reincarnations. The Lotus has been a strange success with its measly 190-hp but its still considered an exotic because of its wild and untamed look. Good luck Toyota!

It’s about time there was a bigger return to 4-cyl RWD performance coupes. Pontiac would have had something with the Solstice Coupe, however it came too late (but should be a nice collectors item). Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe with the turbo-four looks pretty promising, but it could use a bit more in the power dept.
There are plenty of us who want a daily driver that gets good mileage but can still put some moves down when the situation calls for it… and we don’t want to spend $30,000+ to get it.
Amped up econoboxes like the Cobalt SS can fill a purpose… but they are FWD and leave a lot on the table when it comes to drivability.
All said, Toyota has been without a real sports car since the death of Supra, and it has really hurt their sales and image as a company. So many import fans have to look at Toyota, sigh, and walk right by if they want a performance coupe. The designers better get everything right if they want a future in this market.

I recently got a cobalt as a rental and boy was I impressed! It had the steering wheel from a Corvette so it felt like it handled like one too! I wish my daily driver could match Cobalt’s quality interior with recycled plastic (gotta go green!) and abrasive seat textiles that smelled like a tire warehouse.
Speaking of the Corvette, the 1960’s leaf spring technology blew me away and the 7L V8 with ONLY 505hp was impressssssive!

I like the test mule. I’ve always wanted to buy a new remake of the RWD Celica. I believe this car will be NUMBERED 86 and called Celica by Toyota. If we get lucky the engine power will be bumped to 200+HP by the means of VVT-i technology by the second refresh of the model or so depending on how Toyota sees the market for it.
Toyota can call it a different name else where but in US Celica name has made a long lasting impression on buyers.

shocker… Need More Oil is in here touting some bull s***.
This thing looks sharp. That big gaping nose will eat squirrels for breakfast, too. Glad to see them working on a good coupe to have fun with. The Scion TC was the supposed “slot filler/replacement” to the Celica, and it was a piece compared to the last gen Celica. The GT-S with the 6 speed was a hell of a fun car. Let’s hope this is a trend Toyota is going to continue (new Supra please).
I saw on LLN’s front page that Subaru is planning a new SVX of sorts to come out against the M3 & such. Toyota needs to get on board with that, too, and have a real lineup of a couple of hot coupes….
