Toyota and General Motors have announced the recall of 660,000 cars due to window issues. The recall includes the 2003-2004 Toyota Matrix and Corolla, as well as the 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe. As we reported earlier, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration was investigating complaints about the cars’ side windows.
The recall — which involves 540,000 Toyota Matrix and Corolla vehicles and almost 123,000 Pontiac Vibes – is due to a faulty bolt that holds the passenger’s and driver’s side glass.
According to Automotive News, in all, the NHSTA and the automakers received over 500 complaints, which included 36 reports of injuries and one crash. The NHSTA also reports that there are an estimated 12,000 warranty complaints involving the defect.
The complaints ranged from the side windows getting stuck to the whole glass unit shattering during operation.
The recall also gives more credence to the report that Toyota and GM’s New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in California — where all three vehicles are made — allowed for defective vehicles to roll off the assembly line.
