Toyota has unveiled an all-electric version of its iQ city car at the Geneva Motor Show. Toyota plans to put a road-going version of the iQ EV into production in 2012.

Based on the current iQ, the EV prototype represents “ Toyota’s long-term vision for short-range, sustainable mobility.” The EV prototype uses an all-electric drivetrain based on Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, fitting perfectly with the iQ’s city-friendly nature.

Toyota developed a new lithium-ion battery pack for the iQ EV, with the unit fitting completely beneath the vehicle’s floor. The design allows for maximum interior volume while returning 65 miles per charge.

No other details were given, but Toyota plans to begin fleet tests of the EV this year with a potential market launch in 2012. Initial tests will be held in Europe, but Toyota is considering bring the iQ EV to the United States.
