Toyota, Isuzu partner to produce diesel engine

08/23/2007, 11:13 AM

By Drew Johnson

Toyota has announced today that it will partner with Isuzu to produce a small diesel engine for the European market. The agreement will allow Toyota to take advantage of Isuzu’s highly reputed diesel technology. Company officials said the 1.6 liter diesel will be available in European Toyota vehicles starting in 2012. Toyota has owned a 5.9% stake in Isuzu since November of last year.

The Duramax was a success and a reliable engine for GM, no reason Toyota won’t prosper with this partnership.

Isuzu makes crap cars but their diesels are extremely reliable. If it weren’t for their engines they would’ve folded a long time ago.

I think I remember something about Toyota and Isuzu were developing a diesel-hybrid engine too.

The Tundra Diesel (2500/3500HD) is due out anytime between 2008 to 2010, depending on your source (Car and Drive/Motor Trend).

It’s amazing how much clout Toyota gets with a puny little 5.9% ownership interest…

It’s quite understandable that 5,9% seems like a small amount, but you have to remember that that still makes Toyota the third largest owner, and it’s THAT, not the procentual amount, that gives Toyota leverage.

Toyota also owns Diahatsu in Japan. They make commercial trucks and without Toyota they would have been bankrupt and extinct.
Toyota must have a sponsor a pathetic japanese company program. For only 5.9% you can sponsor a fledgling Japanese car company
