Nothing else is made at the Texas plant. It is solely a Tundra plant. Tundra’s, among all other FSPU, aren’t selling. So they lay off workers. Temporary workers. Workers that signed up knowing their time at the plant would be TEMPORARY. It is not the worst thing that happen. It’s just another sign that the automotive industry you though you knew is completely over.

Why doesn’t Toyota idle their Mexican plants? Why lay off American workers?

I know, those are silly questions, but why are the domestic haters not asking these questions?

And xyunya, what other vehicles does Toyota make in San Antonio? The Sequoia? I’m sure they’re not idling the plant due to the sales of that vehicle! The Sequoia is a Toyota SUV, and therefore sells 50k units/month and runs on fairy dust and children’s wishes and gets 80mpg at the same time.

I’m sure they’re not idling the plant because Sequoia sales aren’t up to snuff, either.

Or did you mean that they built unit constructed vehicles there, too, and can therefore switch to cars whenever they wish? The Sequoia certainly isn’t unit, though.

Either way, were you just giving us a red herring argument to support your love of Toyota? Seems like it.

crash1433, Ford is closing 3 plants for long periods of time. Toyota one for 2 weeks. That’s all discussion is about. Gm and Chrysler are both idling plants as well, but not for 2 weeks and not one plant. Financially Toyota is still making money (and a lot of it, actually margin is better then “Big Oil”) ford or gm are borrowing money (in large quantities). Toyota truck is not as good as either Ford, GM or Dodge truck. Neither of them selling any trucks.

I love it. If this was a ford or gm post saying the same thing it would be the first sign of the end of the company and the closing of the brand as a whole. But because toyota is the company that is going to save the planet and reverse greenhouse gasses with their trucks that get such great mileage nothing is being said. By the way, I ahve talked to several people who have the 5.7 and get 9 or 10mpg. awesome for them.

There is slight difference in letting 200 temps off and closing plants left and right. The same factory does produce other vehicles, not only Tundra’s. Robots and conveyor set up are pre-programmed to handle at least 3 types of vehicles. If 2 other types Highlander and Tacoma, the plant does not have to produce a lot of them at the moment (I really don’t know what the line-up of the given plant is). The issue may be not only Toyota plant, but ecosystem around it. The factory is an assembly line, parts are coming from other factories and suppliers: local suppliers usually need more time to re-tool then Toyota, even in Japan.

I posted this before. Buy stock in KIA because it is the only car Americans will be able to afford once the depression sets in. Don’t worry, oil prices will drop off the cliff once the hedge funds and speculators driver the economy into the ground. They’ll get it in the end but only after they rob everyone’s nest egg with the help of the SEC and Federal Government.

The Indiana plant that produces trucks for Toyota laid off 300 Aerotek people 2 months ago. Toyota workers don’t have to worry or start a union or anything, though. The fatherland will support them through thick and thin. Oh wait! The fatherland is Japan!! Can you apply for unemployment in Japan for a Japanese factory closing in the USA?? Too bad. More good news! Toyota just had a recall on the Sienna. Seems the tailgate struts wear out early. Toyota doesn’t call it a recall though, it’s just a quality concern. Tell that to a soccer mom who’s legs are sticking out of the bottom of an unexpectedly closed Toyota Sienna tailgate. Hope she has a good sense of humor, everyone else at the field will be laughing. Serves ‘em right.

Why dont they just put that POS 2.7L 4cyl that powered the disaster that was the T-100. It was slow as molasses in the 1000# lighter T-100 but it would get decent MPG. It wouldnt hurt their JD Power rating because those motors last atleast 180 days.

If so many people didn’t buy trucks and SUV’s for the “high class”, “bad @$$” or “I’m not a soccor mom” look, we wouldn’t be having this problem. That’s the problem, it was a fad and now it’s gone. Who thinks 4×4’s and gawdy trucks and suv’s look cool anyway? As much as I hate oil companies I’m glad it’s hurting the people who DIDN’T NEED to buy that truck or SUV. I would like to see the magic Toyota flexible manufacturing switch to unitized bodies LOL. With Toyota’s huge investment and advertising budget into the Tundra they needed to move 100k a year for three years to swing a profit…..you think maybe their product cycle will be adjusted, kind of like the Titan.

Didn’t some fool in another thread say that Toyota could simply push a button and magically start producing fuel efficient cars at their truck plants, but that domestic brands were too stupid to have this tech which has been there “since the 80s”…?
