Toyota managers on new car shopping spree

01/14/2009, 9:53 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Toyota managers in Japan are trying to boost the automakers significantly slipping sales by going shopping – for new Toyotas. The managers say they hope the effort will offset the sales drops experienced by Toyota in its sluggish home market, where new car sales have almost ceased.

A Toyota spokesperson told the Associated Press that a letter was circulated to Toyota’s 2,200 midlevel managers about a month ago encouraging them to purchase new cars. Another request was made at a managerial-level meeting last week.

The managers have an almost club-like repertoire, the spokesperson said, that could make the initiative a success. No manager is forced to purchase a vehicle, but certain social pressures will likely lead to a significant increase in new Toyota purchases.

Toyota strongly encourages teamwork and bonding among its employees – a tough task these days, especially given that managers have already taken a 10 percent pay cut.

So Toyota emplyes don’t buy what they sell, at least a American brand will not just give their employ’s a big discount, but will apply all rebates and special financing on all vehicles year round. To part suppliers, to a dealer’s lot porter, it’s there if they want it…

Unlike a Toyota dealer employee, that needs to shop for a add car, if they want a Toyota…

if they have enough managers to make that big of a dent in their sales numbers maybe they should just fire them.

hey hey… i can agree with you all saying most of their cars, (since the demise of the supra, MR2 turbo, and original altezza) even the japanese-assembled ones, although long lasting and well assembled, ARE FREAKIN APPLIANCES

BUT THE LAND CRUISER, AND LAND CRUISER PRADO ARE BEASTLY MACHINES.. usually class leading in terms of capability, assembly quality, ride quality, and elegantly styled even if a bit bland

Two things:
1. If I were a manger, I’d quit … no way I’m being forced to drive SHIAT like that.
2. The managers should be on a new design spree.

Why not, nobody else wants their unreliable sh1t. Americans would much rather be dring a GM product than a POS Toyoda. It’s your duty as an Amercian.

Need more taxes for GM, we are doing our American duty by investing our tax dollars into your posting here. Driving the crap you intend to build or sell we leave to Arabian sheiks, before they enter Guantanamo Bay.

In Japan, most of middle class refreshes cars every 2 years. The “old” one returned to the company and new one purchased. The reason is very stringent car ownership laws. After first 2 years car must go through very stringent inspection carried by dealer, at this point it could be cheaper to replace it.

so when the economy goes downhill they immediately fire the ceo now they are pressuring managers to buy new cars. sounds like a great company to work for. not only will skew their actual numbers for sales because they wouldnt have purchased otherwise thats just sh**ty

Hey at least they are trying something. I don’t hear the Japanese government talking about bailing anyone out… They must have a REAL free market economy.
