Lowering worker’s wages has got to be the easiest and most cowardly way of dealing with this problem. If they have so much pride in their product and the workers who make it, then a fitting thank you should not be, “thanks for making us number one, here’s a pay cut”
THE SAD THING is that this will never be reported in the news outside of car enthusiast news. So all the deaf dumb toyota/scion/lexus crowd will continue to mindlessly flock to dealerships and buy their yawnmobiles that will now be made by a new army of slave labor who can barely feed their families. Awesome.

. And you could also make the argument that toyota cares more about its employees than GM because hey, they’re idling production for 11 days, GM was shutting down plants left and right."

GM had no choice. As Toyota/Honda hire workers in the south GM is closing plants to compensate for lost marketshare. They didnt lay off employees for fun. I cant believe people who blast the UAW are defending Toyota paying workers 60% of their pay for not working. Its all the same thing. Its just like the jobs bank.

Borat:

Union already agreed to pay cuts for new workers, increases in healthcare contributions and the ending of pensions for new workers. GM has is going to save $3B a year due to negiotiated changes with the union. By 2010 new hires at the Big 3 will make less than hires working for Toyota/Honda in the US. Get your facts straight. The stuff they do in Japan would be hated by anti-UAW people if it were done here. Lifetime employment? Even the UAw doesnt get that.

I think I might have to inflict some severe trauma to my head with a blunt object in order to understand what "Need more oil for GM" is talking about.

It sounds like the pay cut is only for the days that the plants are closing, then they go back to full pay. So the workers will get at least 60% of thier regular salary for staying home and relaxing during the shutdown. I could use a week of that.

Toyota achieved something that neither of domestics ever could: negotiate with its own employees for the good of shareholders and corporation. Our management and employees are absolutely sure that they work for themselves. As a result GM management and unions bankrupt shareholders and working on the rest of population of US.
Eventually they'll be footnote in history, they already the main chapter of every management book. Chapter titled "How to screw up effectively".

LOL.... One UAW worker makes what 5 Japanese assembly plant worker makes, soon it will be one to seven ratio...

Toyota heads: We are giving you all pay cuts!

Japanese worker: Yes master...

Toyota heads: HA-HA-HA-HA....... That's why we don't have Unions... As long as American's keep buying our cars we will be O.K. unlike their auto company's... HA-HA-HA-HA......

Another Toyota head: Heck some of their union members buy our cars! HA-HA-HA-HA....

And we all know this is what is going on over in Japan...

moparsalesman

There's no doubt about that. I'm not saying that Toyota is like this invincible company, in this economic slump it's just not possible. All I was saying is that you have to give them credit for doing as well as they have - albeit "well" is somewhat of a relative term - despite the circumstances. As for where things are going to go I'm guessing EVERYONE is gonna be hurting really bad. I just hope everyone can make it out ok. I mean after all, without all those companies there's no competition, and without competition the products really won't improve that much, which will result in mediocre quality. So let's just hope everyone can make it out either through their own devices or through some sort of help.

mayer_ray_nagin, I agree. And you could also make the argument that toyota cares more about its employees than GM because hey, they're idling production for 11 days, GM was shutting down plants left and right. That, and toyota is simply lowering their pay to compensate for this economic downturn rather than just laying people off all over the place. At least toyota's still keeping their employees.

There is no company that actually cares about its employees and wants what's in their best interest, NMOGM. It's up to each and every one of us to care for himself and pursue his own best interest.
