MC: Looks are subjective (I thought everyone knew that?), and as for “faster”, if I cared about one or two tenths of a second, then maybe that would matter to me…but considering that the difference between 3.4 and 3.6 is to me, irrelavent. I don’t give two ****s.

They’d better recover soon cause the American Revolution is getting stronger and stronger by the minute. I still don’t see how hiding behind Toyota is going to help since GM is going to wipe them out as well but I digress.

It is a little known fact that Henry Ford helpped mr Toyota after WWII the truth of the matter is they owe Ford big time! they would still be building looms and other textile machines and wouldn’t be in the car business.

I think the Toyota exec said that because its no secret Toyota is trying to gain American favor and helping to “save Ford” would make them the ultimate “nice guy” car company. I think Ford will do a turn around without their help and regain the American car buyers’ faith(money). This is not a knock on Toyota because we’re a capitalist country and they are on top of their game,but as an American citizen and Michigan resident I’d hate to see America gain more favor for a non-American car company.

Perhaps with this alliance Toyota can learn how to build a few inexpensive rear wheel drive cars for its non-Lexus divisions.

Then again I’m assuming that Ford even remembers HOW to build a rear wheel drive car that doesn’t have a solid rear axle.

I agree with spartiates81. Toyota would benefit from this alliance by working with Ford to get much-needed diesel engines into its trucks. Ford, on the other hand, might be able to sell some of its plants to Toyota. I don’t see any kind of merger or anything like that, just a business alliance ala GM and Subaru or GM and Suzuki or Daimler and VW.

I would say these type of alliances will become more common practice. It takes an immense amount of capital to develop new technologies today. If two companies can share the burden for one new technology, not only do the two companies benefit, the consumers do as well. We’ve already seen this with GM, Chrysler and BMW devloping the new dual drive transmission. This will be the only way, incidentally, for consumers to get a REAL solution to the energy issue. A half dozen major manufacturers coming up with a half dozen solutions to alternative energy sources only confuses the market and cost more money in the end. If GM, Ford, Daimler, and BMW were to come together to design a true alternative technology, everybody would win. It would help enable a needed change in the infrastructure.

That’s all this alliance is about. Ford will not be manufacturing Toyotas, nor vice versa. Toyota’s trade secret is in it’s manufacturing plants. That is the single reason for Toyota’s rise to the top.
