Cars in Japan probably fall out of favor since it costs too much in Japan. In NYC, parking a car is over US$550/month (in a decent part of town ... even higher in Manhattan). That's just to park it. Imagine fuel, insurance, maintenance ... time lost fighting traffic.

Japan has crazy emission standards ... so keeping a car like 10 years is like chasing your tail. You have to do so much to keep it 'up to standard' can pretty much bankrupt the average person. You are better off buying a new car than try to bring an old car up to standard. That's why you see all the high end sports cars being exported to Australia, UK, all other RHD countries (you'll see the odd on in North America). It's almost sickening to see how cheap you can buy a R32 / R33 GT-R over there ...

Anyway ... I can see how Japanese youth are abandoning cars. Transit there is fantastic -- fast, clean, efficient (just be weary of the perverts who try to feel up girls in the subway). And it seems it's a 'cultural' thing to commute instead of owning a car since that's a "green" thing to do. (Aside: another reason why Japanese makes are investing so much in alternative fuels -- try to prop up sales domestically as well as internationally).

I assure you sharpie, I probably have more of a world perspective than you do, being born in Europe and living there for more than half of my life until finally moving to the US. You can't take all of my comments literally, and the one you are responding to is an example of this. Some of my posts are serious (like this one), but others, especially ones in which I compare the cars of the future to my dick, are sarcastic or at least a lot less serious. My last post was not trying to say why cars are becoming less popular in Japan because the article already mentions that it is an economic issue, my post was trying to simply make a point - one that is not even really about this article. I just used the quote from the article that talked about how cars aren't cool anymore to make the point of how boring Japanese car companies are. No, just because they are boring does not mean that people will buy American cars (although Lexus is struggling in Japan because Japs find it "too Japanese" and are instead sticking to BMWs and MBs according to another article).

Also, I should point out that although you have an argument that Hong Kong and Singapore are cities, Taiwan should definitely not be in your list of "cities". It is a 30,000 square mile island...

And lol, don't count on the Chinese government imposing regulations on anything anytime soon. If China knows anything from the West, it is that regulations are not good for the national economy and just slow progress on everything.

As for Europe being the same, you bring up a sort of good point autonut. Diesel is what Europeans have turned to in fueling their cars because things are pretty expensive there as well when it comes to owning a car. But also remember that Europe AND Japan are two extremely densely populated countries. Japan has more than 1/3 of the US population but about 1/18 or something of the land area. Europe has three times are many people as the US yet US has actually been selling MORE cars than Europe in the past few years - 16 million to 15 million for Europe (but that is changing). I think that goes a long way in explaining why cars are become unpopular in such densely populated regions and public transit is become more popular. For other examples look at Hong Kong and even New York

sharpie, not only in Japan but in Europe situation is the same . Cars are expensive and cost of ownership is huge. I think in Japan cars fall out of fashion, Europeans love to drive. In China car is symbol of freedom and status symbol. Only in this century Chinese can buy a car and drive for a picnic or just to see a patch of brown grass. Brown grass is absent in cities or you can't see it in the smog.

According to Commodore, Japanese will just start buying American cars in Japan then? It has NOTHING to do with any particular automaker. It's a change in the Japanese's culture, forced on by high maintenance and purchasing cost and fuel cost of a car in Japan. Commodore has obviously never been to Japan or similar Asian places such as Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In these cities, the cost of car ownership, including the strict emission standard, makes automobile a luxury item (or liability) rather than a necessity as in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Most of the people there do live fairly close to the city if not IN the city, so public transportation is convenient and less costly to use.

So I am glad you enjoy your car, but you only based your opinion on Western lifestyle and obviously don't know much about Japan and the reason why car ownership has fallen out of favor. China has not gotten to that point with regard to emission and safety standard (although Hong Kong has). When the Chinese government start imposing regulations that make car ownership much higher there, we may see the same change in attitude as well.

ATTENTION EVERYONE. As of todau 3/26/08 I will no longer be posting comments on here due to the lack of maturity, and problems of whoever is using our LLN handles and trying to impersonate me and anyone else, and therefore causing problems.

If any comments after this post are said by my handle, they will have a hyperlink to a gay porn site (Do not click on it) and are deemed offensive to anyone just know it wasn't said by the real me. After using LLN over the past 7 months, it's sad it's come to this. Good luck everyone.

"No one thinks a car is cool anymore." - HAHAHAHAHAH, well have you seen the cars that Japan has been churning out lately? They are certainly anything but cool. I have been saying for a while that the only people who buy Camcords and such cars are ones that don't even like cars - they just want to go from point A to point B. Some will say that "that is what cars are meant for" but I disagree. I myself love cars, everything about the experience of owning and driving a car, so I can tell you that even if I lived in a city with a perfect public transit system I would still own a car and NOT use the public transportation. Nothing can happen to make me think that a car is not cool anymore..except perhaps being forced to drive a Toyonda or one of those 500mm "cars of the future" that are smaller than my dick. Those certainly are not cool anymore

Why not open a mall? If the car sales area is going down the tubes, why not diversify and be a landowner / mall owner? You know Japanese love buying stuff ... just make sure there's lots of French cosmetics / handbags and other trendy items ... you got a winner.

And if you sell a few cars in the process ... win-win.
