General Motors’ global sales numbers have finally been tallied — totaling 9,369,524 vehicles — and that figures appears to be enough to keep GM ahead of Toyota in global sales. GM has held the title for the last 76 years, but it was believed that Toyota was poised to pass the Detroit automaker this year. However, an insides sources says that Toyota sold only 9,366,000 units worldwide in 2007.
Despite slumping home markets for both automakers, overseas sales were way up. Toyota ’s overseas sales increased by 10% — totaling 7.1 million vehicles — while overseas sales accounted for 59% of GM’s total sales. GM also saw record sales in Europe and Latin America, Africa and Middle East Regions, as well as a 95% increase in Russian sales.
GM also continues to be well ahead of Toyota in China, one of the most rapidly growing car markets in the world. GM’s Chinese sales were up 19% to 1.03 million vehicles in 2007.
No word on when Toyota will release a sales count down to the last car, but it looks as though GM has wrapped up it 77th consecutive year as the world’s largest automaker.
