Toyota says that its production will drop about 12 percent between now and the fiscal year ending next March. The Japanese automaker, struggling as much as any other amid the global sales slump, predicts it will make about 6.2 million vehicles in its worldwide assembly plants.
Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper reports Japanese that production is unlikely to exceed 12,000 vehicles – the minimum number required for the automaker to turn a profit in its home operations – until October. A Toyota spokesperson would neither deny nor confirm the report.

Toyota will cut its Japanese production about 30 percent – the lowest level since 1978. Production in other markets will not be down as much, though Toyota hasn’t officially announced its predictions.
