The race to the luxury sales crown isn’t the only interesting battle going on in the automotive industry. Toyota has inched ahead in the all-important minivan sales race, with the Japanese automaker looking firmly in command.

Through October Dodge’s Grand Caravan held a narrow 975 unit advantage over the Toyota Sienna – 92,930 vs. 91,955 – but the Sienna was able to surpass the Grand Caravan during the month of November. The Sienna now holds a 99,865 to 98,983 unit lead over the Grand Caravan.

Despite its popularity, the Sienna has never been the U.S.’ best-selling minivan. The award this year could soften the blow of Toyota’s Lexus brand getting knocked off as the nation’s best-selling luxury brand.

The best-selling minivan of 2009 – the Honda Odyssey – has recorded 95,579 sales through November, good for third place. The Grand Caravan’s platform mate, the Chrysler Town & Country, currently ranks fourth in minivan sales with 84,701.
