Toyota's RAV4 fits into the niche that is filled by compact crossover SUVs. Now in its third generation, it is a vehicle that has only started to look better with age.
The RAV4 is available in three distinct flavors. Base, Sport or top-of-the-line Limited models give buyers a choice of four-cylinder or V6 engines, as well as 4x2 and 4x4 drivetrains, to let them make the decision that is best suited to their lifestyles and needs.
The RAV4 is built on a 104.7-inch wheelbase, which allows for optional third-row seating. Special attention has been given to reducing noise levels and improving ride quality and handling. An aerodynamically enhanced shape helps the RAV4 to cut through the wind, which again reduces road noise, and improves fuel economy.
The RAV4's standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is equipped with Toyota's Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). It is coupled with a gated four-speed automatic transmission. This package provides 166-horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque @ 4000 RPM. EPA fuel estimates slot in at 21 city/ 27 highway for the 4x2, and 20 city/ 25 highway for the 4x4.
Optional power is available by way of the 269-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which Toyota claims is the powerhouse in the segment. This engine provides 246 lb-ft of peak torque @ 4700 RPM. Only available with a five-speed, gated-shift automatic transmission, it has EPA ratings of 19 city/ 27 highway for the 4x2 model, and 19 city/ 26 highway for the 4x4 model. Both are certified by the EPA as Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV II).
The RAV 4 rides on P215/70 R16 tires with 16-inch steel wheels. The V6 model ups the ante with P225/65 R17 with five-spoke steel wheels. Both have a full-size spare tire.
Inside, occupants will find fabric six-way driver, and four-way passenger front seats. The second row's 60/40 seats also have fold-flat capability. The driver and front passenger advanced airbags are on the job while standard side airbags and roll-sensing side curtain airbags do their part in the event of a mishap.
Available options for the RAV 4 include 17-inch five spoke alloy wheels with P225/65
R17 tires, a third-row 50-50 split seat, electronic on-demand 4WD with 4WD with manual lock, and a tow prep package with heavy-duty alternator (with V6 only). The Sport also includes an optional JBL Audio System with MP3 playback capability and a power moonroof. The Limited offers buyers the addition of an optional rear-seat (DVD) entertainment system.
The RAV4 is designed to be many things to many people. Its success in the compact crossover market proves that to be the case.
