Toyota ’s HiLux pickup – immortalized for its strength in an episode of the BBC’s Top Gear – has been recalled for a defective rear driveshaft support bracket that could break during heavy use.
The recall, which only affects Australian-market HiLux trucks, covers 116,507 four-wheel-drive trucks produced between January 2005 and February 2010. Toyota says that the issue mainly affects vehicles used in rough road conditions, such as over cattle grids and on undulating unpaved terrain.
Unlike Toyota’s Tacoma and Tundra recalls in North America, the Australian recall does not appear to be related to rust.
According to Toyota, 19 vehicles have suffered support tears, but only one was a total failure. No injuries have been reported.
