Toyota has announced the recall of 15,600 2007 Toyota Tundra pickups due to a transmission part problem. According to Toyota, the recall stems from a faulty rear propeller shaft on four-wheel drive Tundras. The defect could cause the joint to separate, although no accidents or injuries have been reported because of the faulty shaft.
“The front joint on the rear driveshaft may have been improperly heat treated by our supplier,” a Toyota spokesman said. “In the worst case, the shaft may separate at the joint.”
According to Automotive News, the flaw was discovered by a customer complaining of a noise coming from the rear shaft.
The Tundra has faced a number of problems this year, although not all were recalls. Several Tundra customers complained of a “rumble strip” sound coming from the truck’s transmission, which was chalked up to a faulty torque converter and replaced by Toyota.
Toyota also replaced the entire engine on some Tundra trucks due to faulty camshafts.
There have also been several complaints about the Tundra’s tailgate failing, although Toyota has yet to address the issue.

I love how Toyota is ALWAYS quick to blame their supplier for whatever problem happens to their vehicles.
Most other automakers accept blame directly, even if it was their supplier’s fault, and not their own. The majority of GM, Ford and Chrysler recalls are due to faulty parts made by their suppliers, yet they almost never blame their suppliers in press releases. Toyota does all the time. Toyota is like a liberal democrat company – they never accept responsibility for their own actions. Blame everyone else.

If you want to sell out to Toyoda just because they are offering $10,000 in discounts on this **** and because you heard somewhere that Toyoda is reliable, this is how you will learn your lesson.
And this isn’t even as big of a recall as ALL the other problems the tundra has had. Transmission failures, camshafts snapping, tailgates cracking…………Toyoda thinks that by making their truck gianormous and putting a big engine in it that they have made a good full-size. Idiots!

OK, Toyota recalled 16K trucks due to problem. However all of those truck were build in Texas by American workers (I am sure no illegals). So why is so much cheers? Because those trucks are not build in Mexico or Canada? Or because plant is still open. The quality of “domestic” made in Canada and Mexico is better then it was before because Toyota and the rest of foreign manufacturers captured 50% of domestic market.

Toyota has definitely dropped the ball on the launch of this product. They finally build a fullsize pickup that matches the domestics in size and they seem to have completely overlooked nailing the details. Toyota had better get their act together soon. The perception of quality and reliability is what made this company. If they lose this, their products really don’t have anything else to make them stand out in the market.

And the idea that Toyotas are made here is laughable. They are ASSEMBLED here out of parts made in Japan and elsewhere. And remember the story the other day about Toyota cutting costs? I think that is what we’re seeing here – either bad engineering or poor materials due to the Wal Mart mentality.

Unlike the Prius. And the Camry. And a few of their engine ranges.
But seriously, I’m curious when they’re going to fix a few details. Such as the horrible vibrations I’ve now experienced in two Tundra pick-ups, that specifically effect the mirrors to where you can’t see out of them, and the bed which is weasy. Also the interior seems very cheap and reminiscent of GM interiors from the 90’s.
And yet their still having legal issues with the past generation.

I don’t know why you guys are putting the Titan up high. Along with the Armada, it had so many problems during its launch, that Nissan had to bring 200 engineers over to the US to get it right.
Unfortunately for Toyota, this launch is going down the toilet, a day at a time. It’s very sad to see. From spending billions on a plant for the truck, then the gas price increase, then the hypocritical environmentalists, then the camshafts, then the safety rating debacle, then the ride quality issue, then the torque convertor issue, then the tailgate issue (which I’m not convinced of yet…just because it started on TundraSolutions doesn’t make it widespread concern) and now a drivetrain recall. And to cap it, it doesn’t look like Tundra will break Toyota’s 200,000 unit goal.
It’s very scary to see all of these concerns and then compare it Toyota’s statement that the Tundra launch is their most important launch in their 50 year history in the US.
I will still defend Toyota’s quality story but this is very concerning. Hopefully it won’t affect Toyota sales in the long term. I doubt it will.

According to this article (found via google, can’t vouch for it’s authenticity): http://www.toyoland.com/trucks/tundra-2007.html , “the [2007] Toyota Tundra was engineered using quite a few former Jeep-Truck Engineering and Ford people”. So the Tundra was engineered by DCX and F’s cast-offs (I believe Toyota has an engineering center in Ann Arbor). So those of you ripping on the “Japanese engineering” are partially incorrect. And those of you saying “American engineered trucks are better” are partially incorrect as well. Those of you who are saying “stick with the domestic’s who have been doing this for ~80 years” are much closer to the truth!

Vortec, so Toyota still is not to blame for HIRING those DCX and Ford “cast offs”? See, that’s the problem, they are growing so fast, they’ll take anyone else’s trash. And they are arrogant enough to think that their “systems” are idiot-proof. They also don’t test nearly enough. They are the stingiest company when it comes to independent durability testing & evaluation. They think their cars can come straight from the CAD machine to production line perfect, and now it’s coming back to bite them in the ass. I’ve never worked with more arrogant pricks than these guys, even the Germans were nicer people, and they paid their bills on time with no hassle.

I’m a GM fan, so I enjoy seeing this. The thought was that Toyota can do no wrong. Buy one, and it’ll go for 200,000 miles, no problem. The automotive media talked about, “when Toyota becomes #1″, or “by the end of the year Toyota will be the worlds biggest auto maker.” Throwing GM under the bus for inferior products & such. So while I could really give a **** who’s #1, I like to see this. I love how the press likes to over analyze everything and come to conclusions to early. Will Toyota become “the worlds biggest automaker” while their perceived quality takes continuous hits? I don’t know?

Globally, Toyota is already #1 in sales. As far as going from CAD quickly to production, that is true. Toyota stopped this method and substantially increased development time and prototype builds with the introduction of the 2008 Highlander.

kaizen – the Titan had its problems, but every brand-new car launch often does. However, the Titan was made by a much smaller company. It was taken seriously, but when Toy, a huge, supposedly eco-friendly automaker and our biggest competitor introduces a monstorous truck, it just can’t be ignored. As the #1 automaker (and it isn’t official until the end of the year), everything Toyoda does will be magnified x1000 just like it was with GM. After Americans bought into Toyoda and Honda, these companies because huge, they can no longer be passed off as the little guys who are beating the big guys like some people here (1115) were trying to say. So it is perfectly fair in my eyes to have Toyoda be criticized just like GM is. And I don’t feel sorry for them at all that Toy is being hammered by the tree huggers. They have, for so long, sold many more cars than they should have because of the recent green movement. So when Toyoda chooses to be hypocritical and talk about eco-friendliness and in the next breath introduce a huge truck (have you seen the CrewCab?) with a giant V8 engine that gets worse fuel economy that GM so they deserve the criticism.
But don’t worry, with all the cash Toyoda has made in America, they have plenty to finance incentives as big as the Tundra in order to reach their 200,000 sales goal.
Hopefully though, people will stop mindlessly buying Toyodas because of its “quality reputation”. That is out the window in my eyes, with problems not only with the Tundra, but with the Camry, and even some Lexus models. Greed is what motivates Toyoda now (like many other Asians companies) and their quest to be #1 and to make more money is what is going to bring them down. After World War II, we seem to have taught capitalism to Japan pretty well.
On the media issue..I can’t for the life of me understand why our media was rooting for Toyoda to be #1. They were practically counting down the days. It’s embarrassing, and it happens nowhere else in the world.
