928 (cool handle): I can understand your reluctance to shop with Toyota (the one you ought to avoid). BUT I tend to suspect the driver first in instances of unintended acceleration.

That's the only propblem I've heard about a Nissan from anyone I knew who owned one. It's possible that there's some error with the throttle, but I'm skeptical.

928dreamer, I can understand Toyota's reluctance to assume the customer was actually having unintended acceleration. Remember back in the 80s when Audi supposedly had the same thing? It turned out lots of people were hitting the gas instead of the brake and blaming the car...

But it doesn't stop me from grinning a little bit that Toyota has yet ANOTHER recall...

This is not all floormats. This is a problem that Toyota has been trying to sweep under the rug for quite some time. I have a family member that bought a new Avalon that had several instances of unintended acceleration. The engine would rev like at WOT and he had to apply very firm braking to keep the car from ramming the vehicle in front of him.

When he approched Toyota about the problem he was treated like and idiot and was told that he was simply pressing on the gas and brake at the same time. They would at no time even consider that there may actually be a problem with the car. They did have someone take it for a test drive and did not have the problem occur, so there was not a problem with the car. Well, No Kidding. It is an intermittant problem that only cropped up 3 times in 3000 miles.

I have no proof, but I think that this is a much more serious problem than floor mats. Possibly related to an electronic glitch in the drive by wire system. Regardles, Toyota's handling of the problem was despicable.

I for one probably will never buy a Toyota product.

Fluffer: what are you talking about?
You keep saying GM's trying to compete with Toyonda.
I hope they ain't .

"Subject-verb agreement" is a compound modifier, so there should be a hyphen there. I ain't a graduate with a major in English (part of a double) for nothing!

autonut: I forgot my first horse pill, but I'll just take two later

From Merriam-Webster

ain't
One entry found for ain't.

Main Entry: ain't
Pronunciation: 'Ant
Etymology: contraction of are not
1 : am not : are not : is not
2 : have not : has not
3 : do not : does not : did not -- used in some varieties of Black English

Although widely disapproved as nonstandard and more common in the habitual speech of the less educated, ain't in senses 1 and 2 is flourishing in American English. It is used in both speech and writing to catch attention and to gain emphasis . It is used especially in journalistic prose as part of a consistently informal style . This informal ain't is commonly distinguished from habitual ain't by its frequent occurrence in fixed constructions and phrases . In fiction ain't is used for purposes of characterization; in familiar correspondence it tends to be the mark of a warm personal friendship. It is also used for metrical reasons in popular songs . Our evidence shows British use to be much the same as American.

subject verb agreement yet he ain't done with me lol
Stop making excuses for the domestics. Why cant they compete with the Japanese ? They had larger marketing departments and R & D to make a better car. THey dropped the ball . Why? If Toyota and Hondas are so lame why is GM breaking their back to come up with a competitor ?

I ain't done with you, Fluffer

Why have the domestics yet to rival the Japanese product? As if there's one homogenous japanese product.

The only top-to-bottom good line from Nippon is Nissan. Beyond that, you go from quirky (Mazda, Subaru) to irrevelant (Mitsu) to lame (you know who).

still having trouble with what a fact is. Here's a refresher, courtesy of merriam-webster

tripleonefluffer: "It also does not mean that GM is in the same league as Toyota."

Toyota is Bush leage, the General is major league

" People don’t jump down GMs throats because of years of shitty cars and inferior quality to the Japanese"

That's like saying people don't abuse Tom Brady for his consistent playoff failures.

"Just because a consumer hates an inferior American product does not mean that they hate America. YOU are the bias one for trying to associate patriotism with buying the inferior product."

no, Fluffer, if someone hates an inferior product, that makes him sensible. Seems lie only you and GM sales are brining up patriotism.

You've still got some hope for working out subject-verb agreement. Maybe you should've finished junior high.

Commodore: "and yes you do sound like you hate America because you constantly put America down and praise the Japanese"
That seems like a logical conclusion.

Tripleonefluffer: people bought Toyotas in the mid-'70s because they were CHEAP and used very little gas. The big Three then tried to make japanese cars (Pinto, Vega) and failed miserably at it. Then came the crap-era (1978 to 1994/1995/1997) At that point, to varying degrees, "American" cars were good, but usually bland, and terribly marketed.
Today, Ford's got some good rigs (Escape has just been dethroned) Chrysler is distictive, for good or ill, and the general is bitch-slapoping toyonda.

Commodore: “and yes you do sound like you hate America because you constantly put America down and praise the Japanese”
That seems like a logical conclusion.

Tripleonefluffer: people bought Toyotas in the mid-’70s because they were CHEAP and used very little gas. The big Three then tried to make japanese cars (Pinto, Vega) and failed miserably at it. Then came the crap-era (1978 to 1994/1995/1997) At that point, to varying degrees, “American” cars were good, but usually bland, and terribly marketed.
Today, Ford’s got some good rigs (Escape has just been dethroned) Chrysler is distictive, for good or ill, and the general is bitch-slapoping toyonda.

I rememeber when a Honda dealer tried to charge me an installation fee for floormats (an option at the time).

I declined and also declined the mats, then because I was so insulted by the "install fee" while they were doing the paperwork I went out to the showroom and ripped off the floormats from another vehicle. I signed the papers and "installed" them myself - without even a set of instructions. I was so proud!

First of all everybody lumps Toyota and Honda into one category, which is an error. Toyota is a really big company, equal to GM. Honda is a maverick motorcycle company which was advised by auto conglomerate of Japan to stay the f*ck out of car business and did not exactly listened.
Toyota entry into US began '57 with shitty cars modeled after British sedans. They succeeded like led balloons. Yet they came back just in time for '73 oil embargo and legislation of pollution control. Embargo and pollution control devices were a hard blow to all auto manufacturers foreign and domestic. At that time I recall myriads of European car manufactures selling in states. NYC was like any other European city full of funky little cars. 5-7 years later they were gone: Citroen, Renault, Morris, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa... But not Toyota. They perceiver.
Honda is a special story. When in '76 Accord came on the market it was endorsed by car enthusiasts as closest competitor to BMW, albeit it was front wheel drive and had about 25% less power then the weakest bimmer and just a notch above the 50% mark of the famous 2002tii. Yet it was the only car that could compete. At that time bimmer was not a status symbol: it was drivers car. Another wonder of Honda was their engine technology: during move to unleaded gas Honda engines worked on leaded without any modification and were polluting no more then competition engines running on unleaded with all the "cleaning" devices bolted on top of them. Those cleaning devices "cleaned" European exports and domestics could manufacture only 6 and/or 8 cylinders worthy of "cleaning" bolt-ons. Honda engines were 1200-1750 cc displacements. The smallest engine GM could master was 2.5K Iron duke of the same output as 1750 cc Honda. But output is half of the story. Iron duke was simply rude, noisy and unreliable. Ford had 2.3L one that was fitted into Pinto. That is a story of its own. Google Pinto, one can't make it up.
The moral is, that domestics had shot across the bow in '73 regarding both environmental changes and fuel consumption. In '80-early '90 they somewhat cleaned their act, but with price of oil dropping they pleaded ignorance to the future. Future has come and they in shitter yet again (I call shitter less then 50% of domestic market and no car line-up). You can blame either ignorance or stupidity, but market place does not respond well to those arguments.

Alright tripleonefive, how old are you? Did you live during this time period? Because if you did, you'd understand that the Japanese came in during a prime period of time, when gas prices were fluxuating, and the Americans rushed in their smaller cars. Yes, their smaller cars were disgusting, but their product line was still reliable aside from those small cars. So guess what? The Japanese come with their smaller cars from their market, and get a chunk of the American pie. Nothing wrong there, but I wouldn't say they took down The Big Three, they had a wonderful chance and they took it. Now, the Big Three are doing this in China! It wasn't their overall reliability, but the few small cars which were relatively unreliable, but compared to the small cars from GM and Ford, they were a major improvement.

The Aura, Impala and Malibu are all very nice cars, I would choose them over the Japanese any day. The Malibu doesn't have all of that great of an exterior, but it's a wonderful car to drive around in, and qualities on par with the Japanese. The Aura I drove personally, and a friend of mine south just bought one, and it's an extremely nice car. It's very sound and has good driving manners, a great interior and good economy. Everything is on par, or better than the Toyota Camry. The same goes for the Impala. American SUV and truck offerings are also better than the Japanese, with a few exceptions (luxury SUV's for the most part, like Infiniti). The American automanufactuerers are on par with the Japanese, and I'm sure there are quite a few people here that will agree with me.

When Toyota had a big impact in the US was the mid 70's. At that point they started and they gained major notoriety in the 80's for build quality. Same with Honda. Don't dance around the question. Why have the domestics yet to rival the Japanese product? The domestics were larger in the 70's. Is it misappropriation of funds or they just cant do it ???
GM is inferior due to the crap they have made Toyota and Honda are superior due to there RESALE RELIABILITY.These are facts. I don't know how many times I have to say it. Also the fact that their cars are usually number one and two in sales while GM is still struggling to get a mid size car to even compete with them.
Like I said the Aura and the Malibu don't cut it. They may prove themselves in 2022 but right now they are nothing more than POS's from GM. This is based on their shitty track record. GM has yet to prove themselves mechanically. I don't want them to fail I want them to make a competitive product. Its not my fault that they cant or wont. Its better for me as a consumer to have more choices. Just because I realize what the better product is does not mean Im Un american
I refuse to buy an inferior car just because I'm American

Of course it doesn't have anything to do with GM. Where do you see GM mentioned in this article? Did GM have a design flaw in some of their vehicles? No, Toyota did. Relating this to GM does not excuse Toyota's mistake. People DON'T just down GM's throat because of years of shitty cars? People like you are constantly bashing them so they have definitely suffered the consequences of makING (past tense) bad cars. Unfortunately, there are still some people like you who refuse to give GM a change to redeem themselves because of whatever might have happened in the past. I can't even remember how many times I have told you that patriotism has nothing to do with what we are talking about. It's about being fair, giving domestic automakers a chance (and yes you do sound like you hate America because you constantly put America down and praise the Japanese).

Actually Toyonda copied GM and Ford for years when they first came to America. Also, Toyota's first car was a blatant copy of a Chrysler. And when you talk about Toyonda coming the America, you realize you are talking about the 50s right? Are you stuck in the last century or something because the 50s don't have any relevance today. Of course they were small back then, all companies start out small. Ford was nothing before the assembly line. GM was nothing before developing the "ladder" system where a buyer starts out with a Chevy and works their way up to a Cadillac. You have no point here. And Toyonda were not making quality cars in the 50s, their quality began in the 80s and got noticed in the 90s. If you want to talk about the 50-early 70s (GM's heyday) then you are definately clueless. GM made some of their most beautiful cars during that period. Notice how you seem to be rooting for the Japs and talking about them "kicking the domestics asses"? That's why I say you hate America. You WANT our automakers to fail, and I can't for the life of me understand why.

I also don't understand why you are so convinced that GM makes bad cars today because of all the mistakes they made in the past yet you don't seem to care about all the mistakes Toyota is making today. Toyota is following in GM's footsteps in more than one way. And what convinced you that Toyonda are superior (besides any personal expiriences you might have had or are making up to prove a point). What facts convince, who says Toyonda are any better than anyone else. And I don't want a 6-year-old "just cuz" answer...I want you to back whatever you say in response to that question with facts, not opinions.

You are right. Toyota messing up on floor mats lol has nothing to do with GM. It also does not mean that GM is in the same league as Toyota, which you have tried to force before. People don’t jump down GMs throats because of years of shitty cars and inferior quality to the Japanese, they expect it. Just because a consumer hates an inferior American product does not mean that they hate America. YOU are the bias one for trying to associate patriotism with buying the inferior product

I don’t know if you are a dolt or just avoiding the question. When Honda and Toyota were first in America they were not nearly as big as the domestics. The big 3 where just that, the big three. Now Toyota is as big as GM but Honda is not as big as Ford or Chrysler. Back then they started kicking the domestics asses with build quality reliability and resale
What happened back then that the domestics couldn’t compete with smaller upstart foreign competition?
JJt if that isn’t a valid question then what happened >?

MHW: not only do I come to the same conclusion as you about GM, you seem to have a firm grip on what a "Fact" is.

Nobody's going to hate a superior product.

Alright, I'm not seeing this as a little, small problem. Yes, of course the floormats are very minor, and don't have much relevance to the testing of the car, but the fact that Toyota didn't recall them when the reports surfaced, and they had to be strongly suggested to recall 55,000 floormats shows so much stupidity to me, on the behalf of the company. Why must a company be WARNED to just recall freaking floormats!?

1115
How are Toyota and Honda small companies? They are just as big as the comparable American competition. Toyota is the size of GM, Honda is the size of Ford, and NissanRenault is the size of DaimlerChrysler.

Why do you always have to try to change the subject to the domestics every time there is a negative article on the "superior Japs"? Because you can't defend your OPINIONS that's why. I have already responded to all the points you made in your last post and you know that, yet you continue to say them over and over again because you have nothing else to say and you are unable to defend Toy for losing its grip on quality. Regardless, you still worship them.

"No matter what Toyota or Honda does the Import haters will jump down there throats bc of their hatred of the superior Japanese product." Yes, and no matter what GM or Ford does, the import humpers will jump down THEIR throats because of their hatred of America. What's your point?? Toyota screwed up, PERIOD. What GM did 30 years ago won't change the fact that Toyota just screwed up ONCE AGAIN
