It’s evident by the IQ Concept — unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show — that Toyota is pushing to create a minicar that could be sold in emerging markets such as China, Russia and Brazil. However, the Japanese automaker is concerned that it might have trouble building a minicar that is safe and high in quality while still pricing it within the segment.
After driving prototypes of Toyota’s low-cost car, Toyota president Katsuaki Watanabe told Automotive News Europe that he found the “level of the new car not bad” but also said there was room for improved quality. This indicates that the price of the small car will actually be higher than originally expected. Watanabe continued to say that Toyota could offer the car for less than €5,000, although he said that the car wouldn’t offer the safety and quality Toyota is known for at that price.
