Toyota, Subaru affirm partnership; hybrid Legacy coming

10/07/2005, 10:27 AM

Just days after Toyota announced it would buy a controlling stake in Subaru and parent Fuji Heavy from General Motors, the two companies have announced their first collaboration. Subaru/Fuji already intends to sell a gas-electric hybrid version of its Legacy passenger car in fiscal 2007, but it now wants to buy major components, such as electric motors, from Toyota. The company has also suggested that Toyota vehicles be produced at Fuji Heavy’s plant in Indiana to turn around the factory’s declining operating rate. Toyota, in turn, will recieve engineering help from Fuji. “We can use Fuji Heavy engineers with high abilities in the Toyota group’s global strategy,” a senior Toyota official said.
