Toyota to combat FJ Cruiser’s blind spots with rearview camera mirror

09/09/2008, 2:43 PM

By Andrew Ganz

The Toyota FJ Cruiser possesses one of the worst blind spots on any new vehicle offered today. Thanks to its blocky styling that gives it a massive c-pillar, as well as a view-blocking spare tire, the FJ Cruiser makes backing out of a parking spot rather difficult. To combat this, Toyota announced today that the 2009 FJ Cruiser will be available with an optional rearview mirror with a built-in camera display.

Leftlane recently spent some time in a Hummer H3T with a similar mirror and we can report that it makes a dramatic difference when backing up. When the vehicle is put into reverse, a 2.4-inch (on the FJ Cruiser) LCD screen automatically appears within the mirror. Toyota hasn’t released pricing on the optional mirror, which will be produced by aftermarket supplier Gentex.

As a owner of a 2007 FJ, this continuing discussion on the less then great outward visibility has always amused me. It is no worst then many vans. It does require some added attention when backing up, but that is a given in any car. Never less, for some this might be a useful gadget. I would hope that Toyota prices it reasonably

How about you just stop making the useless SUV.

Amazing… so drivers can’t be expected to simply turn their heads and look before manouvering? If nothing else… a $1 convex “blind spot” mirror bought at any auto parts store would fix the problem… heck of a lot cheaper than any camera.

Electronics are taking the place of common sense and driver skill… it’s not a good trend at all.

Buddy of mine has one. I’m sure you get used to it, but it’s like tunnel vision. Worse than a cargo van, in my opinion, because the rear window is smaller than you’d get in a cargo van.

Not that I’m endorsing further restrictions by the NHTSA, but I wonder why they don’t regulate rear visibility more than they do. Or maybe they don’t regulate it at all, I have no idea. I’d hate to wind up with cars that all look like Volvo 740s (nothing against the 740, don’t want to piss of any brick nuts here), but at the same time it seems like these “innovations” of visibility would help prevent wrecks.

off my soap box.

Livelyjay, why do you say that the Toyota FJ Curser is useless, the San Bernardino Sheriffs, Los Angeles Sheriffs. And the LADP use them as off road patrol units. I know it’s a Toyota but off road there not bad, why would you say the most horrible things?

Great off roader, but like anything else, most owners will never leave the pavement. So for those who do choose to drive these around town, it would be nice for them to be able to back up in a parking lot without creaming me.

Knowing LA (I’m a Baltimoron), the FJ Cruisers are just for show…. if they wanted something that could bounce around off road and still be a “responsible” police cruiser, they’d just have Explorers or TrailBlazers. They can go as far off road as the cops are likely to take them…

Vosotros your right, the thing is that in L.A. even to police like to show off, in total maybe 15 off road cruiser’s a FJ’s the rest are Ford’s, Chevy’s and Jeeps.

Need more oil for GM

Americans would rather drive GM’s Hummer than a POS Toyota tin can that breaks down all the time. At least Hummers are built to last and withstand serious off road abuse. This pile of crap would probably break all 4 wheels off trying to go over a speed bump too quickly.

This is why GM is trying to sell off Hummer to the North Koreans

maybe they should just mount the camera on the hood so they can see how dumb they look driving it.

@yarddog82abn -> That’s a perfect use for the vehicle, and that’s just fine and dandy. My problem is most people buy their SUVs and use them for commuting to and from work on a daily basis and rarely use its capabilities. It’s such a waste.
