Numbers matters. Toyota is excpeted to sell 70.000 less cars in Japan this year. In USA Toyota has sold less car than expected for 3 months in a row with falling market shares. China market is not very good for Toyota even, not to mention here in Europe, where Lexus is a no brand, and Toyota is suffering a very hard competition since GM-Opel cars, new models from Ford, a re-born Fiat are growing their market shares. May be, simply said, Toyota is a very strong brand but right now challengers are answering with products good enough to compete with toyota's. I drove toyotas and in my opinion, for what i can drive in Europe, Toy's cars are ugly and boring, which means a good product for european city-women. If i can choose, any japanese car simply isn't good enough the money it costs. Best regards

My apologies... When I looked for the trheads where GM was down and Toyota was up, 1115 didn't post. So while I can't make the point that you did say the numbers were important when reversed, I think the group would agree that you might have.

When you said you're "equal on both sides", well I'm sure more than a few of us were rolling our eyes...

Cyclone: i'm opposed to toyotas because I owned one!

Fluffer: No, those sales are just not happening.

I say 4 percent is a significant number, particularly for GM in gains. That's (worldwide) some 360,000 chances to make a good impression.

Get TReal: Japan also has an inteligently though out mass-transit system.

Remember the expenses in Japan of auto ownership, it is crazy expensive.

A lot of people do NOT own a car, if you need to get around on the island trains and buses take you everywhere.

Car makers sell to a small purchasing bloc, and they are getting squeezed like we are.

That 4% loss is going to no one. That expected 4% loss is also the loss of the Japanese market as a whole. In the US amrket though, with Toyota's sales satarting to turn downward, & with the ongoing lower sales of Ford & Chrysler, market share figuresin the last few months point to the fact that GM's where the lost sales are going. But Japan - I think no one will compensate for the Toyota sales. All loss for all automakers there.

I know what you said. Im equal on both sides. Let me break it down for you 4% is too small a number whether Gm is gaining or Toyota is falling.
If it were the other way around it would be the same. I think you get it. Ill write in caps next time if YOU dont understand

Daihatsu always have been selling small cars, and I mean SMALL. U.S. market was a mismatch for them unless they only want to sell to people living in big cities with poor public transportation.

Re-read my last comment...

QUOTE:
"1115, we don't need to check the GM thread because that is not what we are talking about. You would make a big deal if GM was DOWN 4% or if Toy was UP 4% and you'd say that 4% is major. If Toy is down like they are, and GM is up like they are 4% you don't really care. If October sales came in and said Toy is up 4% and GM is down 4% (which is the opposite of what happened) you would brag about Toy's sales growth and talk about Toy's "superior quality" bullsht." - Commodore

In simple, easy-for-YOU-to-understand terms, you would cheer in any situation that Toyota is up OR GM is down, but you would make excuses if Toy was down OR GM was up. Re-read a couple times, and I am sure you will get it eventually. I know its hard, but you can do it!

Daihatsus have been rebadged as Toyotas and those models have been selling real well to "brand conscious" buyers in their respective markets. They are actually decent for the below $10K price tags but I would not want to get into an accident in one of those.

Yes 1c3dog...clearly even the Japanese have begun to forsake the worthless Toyota brand. They'll probably only sell 1.65 MILLION cars this year.....they might as well just shut their factory doors now before it gets really embarrasing.

I'm very curious. I readily admit that I do not like Toyotas. They are grandpa cars that are about as fun as hemorrhoids. But I readily acknowledge that they are good cars (just not for me). Why on earth are so many of you so opposed to Toyotas?

Yes 1c3dog…clearly even the Japanese have begun to forsake the worthless Toyota brand. They’ll probably only sell 1.65 MILLION cars this year…..they might as well just shut their factory doors now before it gets really embarrasing.

See? Even the Japanese have realized Toy Ota was a waste of time and have moved onto better vehicles, both domestic and foreign.

1115, we don't need to check the GM thread because that is not what we are talking about. You would make a big deal if GM was DOWN 4% or if Toy was UP 4% and you'd say that 4% is major. If Toy is down like they are, and GM is up like they are 4% you don't really care. If October sales came in and said Toy is up 4% and GM is down 4% (which is the opposite of what happened) you would brag about Toy's sales growth and talk about Toy's "superior quality" bullsht.

1115, we don't need to check that thread. It wouldn't support your theory of japanese superiority. I propose that if the numbers were reversed you WOULD make a big deal out of it.

In Japan there is less then 20,000 US cars sold combined for the past 20 years. None of US brand has manufacturing facilities in Japan either. Even as Toyota missed 4% in Japanese market they are making up in worldwide sales. According to to their projections they will sell near or over 10 million vehicles worldwide, if Australian numbers are correct. That is more then GM is planning to unload. Guys and dolls, the fact of life is that Toyota will be #1 auto manufacturer in the wold either in 2007 or 2008 if they miss or don't miss 4% of domestic target sales or not.

Well the 4% of people not buying the cars arent buying GM vehicles. If Toyota is down then that money will go to Nissan or Honda maybe Subaru but not to domestics

Four percent of a million is 40,000. Depending on how much profit is made on each sale, that could be a nice chunk of change.

But again, the Japanese market is down. In fact, I think it's down 10 percent or more

Oh well. thats the car market. Your doing great one month(or so on) and then your down one month(or so on)
The automotive market has proven that there are times where sales wont be as strong. I dont think this is very important news.

It seems to me that if Toyota was to exceed their goals by 4% 1115 would think it was a huge deal, don'tcha think? Well, maybe all those recalls are catching up to Toyota after all. Last numbers I heard were the GM numbers were up here, and around 4%, IIRC... ;)

4% is not a big deal? They sold 70,000 fewer cars than they expected. That is a big deal. In addition, it is always important to note that the market fell by 3.8% while Toy fell 4% meaning that Toyota outpaced the market (and in this scenario, that is NOT a good thing).

But it's okay Toy, you will do better next time.
