Toyota to fix accelerators after largest ever US recall

11/14/2009, 9:49 PM

By Mark Kleis

Toyota will soon fix or replace the accelerator pedals on up to 4 million Toyotas and Lexus vehicles in the US. This comes after Toyota Corp’s largest-ever recall of 3.8 million vehicles over potential for a loose floormat to force down the accelerator causing unintended acceleration.

The report coming from the Kyodo news stated that Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had been discussing the need for a solution beyond the replacement of floormats and are in the final stages of agreeing upon a solution.

According to the report, it is likely that Toyota will voluntarily repair or replace the accelerators out of approximately 4 million vehicles in the US. The report suggests that Toyota preferred this solution as they do not believe that the vehicles’ pedals are defective – and thus do no warrant an official recall.

The NHTSA indicated today that at this time the decision on what parts will need to be replaced or repaired is still under investigation – suggesting that the accelerator pedal is only one of the possible fixes under consideration at this time.

Hideaki Honma, a Toyota spokesman, said that Toyota and the NHTSA have not reached an agreement on this matter and that talks are on-going.

The report also pointed out that the vehicles most likely to be targeted by the eventual solution will include the Toyota Prius, Camry, Avalon, Tacoma and Tundra as well as the Lexus IS250, IS350 and ES350 models.

Since 2000 there have been over 2,000 documented cases of unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles, and as many as 19 deaths from resulting crashes – Federal regulators say that is far more than any other automaker has experienced.

A class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of victims of unintended acceleration accidents against Toyota is still in early stages at this time.

Sounds like Toyota has been trying to pull the wool over the NHSTA’s eyes. Toyota, it seems, is just trying to point the finger at parts which are the cheapest to fix (whether they are the true culprit or not). First the floormats (fixed by zip ties!) and now the accelerator pedals. Try the fly by wire system Toyota….you might have better luck…or wait that might cost too much.

Of course I have no proof for any of this, but it stinks so bad I can’t help myself…

I just don’t understand why they didn’t recall and fix the problem as soon as it happened. Instead they covered it up, then issued an optional recall, then said no problem existed, then were proved wrong, and now this. For the record, trying to cover up flaws might work for the time, but when word gets out, the cover up is more of a scandal than the flaw itself. Just be like GM, or most automakers, and recall the vehicles, deal with negative criticism for the next few days, then move on and do business instead of getting caught up in months of criticism and poor care torwards customers. Toyota makes great cars, but still thinks that if they recall cars, they will lose popularity and money. What’s more important, customers’ lives or popularity? You decide.

I hate to say it, but after renting two different ‘09 and ‘10 Camrys over the past few weeks (funny how Hertz seems to have a LOT of them available lately!), I do think there’s something to this.

What I noticed about both Camrys was the almost complete lack of engine braking.. particularly when you cancel the cruise control and the car continues to cruise forward forever without seeming to lose any velocity! Almost every car I’ve ever driven will immediately begin to “drag” once the power is no longer being applied, but I physically had to brake every time to slow these beasts down after cutting the cruise control! I don’t know which mechanical part controls this, but I’m sure it has been tweaked to optimize fuel economy (both the ‘09 LE and ‘10 SE 4-cylinders averaged 33 mpg on mostly freeway trips, about 3-4 mpg more than my much smaller Mazda3s usually gets).

Perhaps this is the reason the folks in that Lexus ES had the violent crash? Maybe the power isn’t being cut, and in fact the cruise control actually increased their speed? I can’t imagine the floormats are the sole culprit (though I noticed Hertz retrofitted their mats with thick zip-tie fasteners to keep them firmly in place).

Why would there have to be a fix? These are TOYOTAS! They NEVER break down, they are the best engineered, best built, and most reliable devices on the road! Built by the clever Japanese, who know more about mass production than any American ever could, plus they are not watering at the trough of the UAW, who is completely responsible for every defect on American cars.

If you want to see for yourself, you can check Consumer Reports, but they don’t have records going back far enough for a solid reference. So far my 4Runner has been the best quality and most reliably built car I’ve had. Since the early 90’s I’ve owned a Blazer, Cavalier, CR-V, Civic, GTI, Jetta, Passat, Ford Escape, and 4Runner. 4Runner blows them all away in overall quality and reliability, although the German cars were the most fun to drive. The crowd is now finally catching up in quality, making the Japanese cars not stand out so much. Just as the Big 3 got lazy and ****y with their quality, Toyota and Honda seem to have done the same in the last few years with certain models.

Sort of a self fulfilling prophecy if you ask me.

As for Japanese ‘quality’, I’ve been in the biz for years myself and I can tell you FIRST HAND that all makes break down – every one. Sure, some more than others, but they all have their problems. I’m glad you like your 4 runner, I really am. But as far as it blowing away the other cars you’ve owned, my guess is that since it’s the most recent vehicle you’ve bought, and quality has been rising across the board for 40 years now, you’ve simply bumped into what many others have also experienced with their american cars. I can attest to 100,000 plus 100% trouble free miles on my ‘03 Bonneville, 45K trouble free miles on my ‘05 GTO, 196,000 ‘almost’ trouble free miles on my ‘97 Yukon (all the problems happened after 150k), and on and on.

gotta love new cars. I love cleaning up the mess after they crash. plenty of plastic and crap everywhere. The vehicles I see catch on fire the most are Lexus’s and cadillacs. go figure toyota’s “fly by wire” system would fall apart just like the rest of the plastic on them.

Ok, maybe you’re not the dooshcanoe I though you were after your first post. I can see you’re at least trying.

‘Build quality’ is another nebulous marker in my opinion. Is this where you’re measuring door gaps, how nice the plastic on the dash feels, etc? It means nothing when the truck rusts out from under you in 5 years, though.

Once again, I’m glad you like your Toyota. So far my favorite car ever is a Pontiac and my favorite truck is a GMC. So what? It doesn’t mean these are the best vehicles ever produced, it means I like them the best – and that might have nothing to do with ‘build quality’. Maybe I like the exhaust note, or just the way they look. Hell, maybe they were just the right color. It doesn’t mean GM is the best manufacturer, or that any other manufacturer’s stuff is below par.

And none of this has anything to do with Toyota and unintended acceleratioon.

Fordman, you must be either mental or retarded . You hope this happens to Ford products? Are you that young and idiotic to want people to die so a car company you dont like gets a bad rap? I really hope you are not over the age 13 which I know you are not and hopefully as you get older you will realise what a moron you are.

The part that I find most amusing is that they go ahead and say they will be changing the accelerator PEDALS yet claim the issue is with the loose FLOOR MATS. Also, if the floor mats are so loose how can they possibly hold the accelerator pedal to the floor? Stupid japanese ****tards.

They are changing to pedals that have a different shape than the original, so the floormat won’t get caught so easily.

But since we know this won’t fix the real problem, I wonder why they would throw millions after it?

Crap, the answer hit me after I hit the button. My guess is they will fix the real issue while the vehicle is in the shop, and they’ll do it secretly. Then again maybe my tinfoil hat is too tight…
