As part of a comprehensive solution to various causes of unintended acceleration being reported in many new Toyota vehicles, Toyota says it will begin implementing an electronic override in all 2011 and newer vehicles that will give braking priority over acceleration. Currently, all non-hybrid Toyota models can receive both braking and acceleration input from the pedals, leaving the two inputs competing for control.
A brake override system shuts off acceleration when both the brake and accelerator pedals are depressed at the same time, and is not a new technology to the automotive industry. Most automakers currently use this system – some for as long as a decade.
Toyota says that it will begin installing a brake override system on the Toyota Camry , Avalon and Lexus ES and IS models that were included in the floor mat recall of 2.3 million vehicles. In addition to retroactively upgrading the pedal system on those models, Toyota will also be incorporating a new brake system with a brake override for all future models made by Toyota, Scion and Lexus.
The first vehicle to feature the new override system to be the all-new 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan.
