With DaimlerChrysler’s Smart ForTwo scheduled to go on sale in the United States in early 2008, Toyota is wasting no time in readying a micro-car of its own for America. Designed to compete directly with the ForTwo, the 2008 Toyota Aygo will be the Japanese automaker’s smallest U.S. offering to date, reports Edmunds. The two-seater will get a fresh look for 2008, with slightly more power — roughly 100 horsepower — for North America. An official unveiling is said to be planned for the Tokyo Motor Show next fall.

Is the engine in the back like in the Smart? Can you stick a GSX-R 1000 motor in it as well?

sweet. now when the producers do a new sequel to the Pink Panther movie they have two cars to choose from to make the Inspector look as stupid as possible.

Looks a lot better than the Yaris, Fit, Versa & ForTwo. Give it ~160hp and this would be a blast to drive. Oh ya, Toyota, please dont put the speedometer in the middle.

“It’s fab”
What does that mean?
Yeah, I hate the gauges in the middle. I thought about getting a Mini, but what stops me is there stupid dashboard.
I saw some other pictures of the car, it looks about 25% longer than a smart, am I imagining things? Or is it roughly the same size?
Anyways, I think the car looks less awkward than the Smart, in terms of proportions. Look wise, I’d go with a Smart, since it looks like something out of a “The Jetsons” cartoon.

Even if the car looks stupid and makes less than 100 HP, this is a brilliant move for Toyota.
This is why Toyota is gaining market share, they see opportunites to compete and they put out a competitive product. SMART could have had a year or two or three to fortify their market share of this basically new segment in America, but now they’ll have competition from the getgo. Perhaps Detroit should wait a year to see how the segment is received by the public, and then pour as many resources into a concept to compete.

my xB has the center mounted gauges and at 1st it was awkward but now i cant drive a normal car because i feel like i am taking my eyes off the road. say what you will but you can not appreciate the center mount gauges from purely a test drive. as for this car. go for it. its surprisingly good looking. and will likely be LOADS cheaper then the smart.

Its only in the center to save money so Toyota has one less thing to move. With that said, I don’t think America is ready for this and Smart cars. It may sell well in some cities, but I still dont see many of these micro-cars selling.

Top Gear gave it 2005 car of the year award, 4 Car recommends it, and it won Fifth Gear’s comparo.
This is a really nice, sporty, tiny car. Much nicer to drive than the Yaris.
Its 68 hp engine takes it 0-62 mph in 14.2 seconds, which is probably why it’ll get the 100 hp engine for the US.
But that would mean it’ll end up getting the same mpg as a Yaris…

All I know is that if I really wanted to buy some tiny little car, I’d take the Toyota over the Smart. Smarts are strange and fun, but they are POS’s.

I have driven the Aygo and trust me it nothing but a rebadged peugeot/citreon peice of ****. It looks awkward and handles like a shopping trolley. Least the smart has the mid engine rear drive setup to handle like a proper car. If you looking to buy the cheaper option of the smart and aygo just go for the citreon c1 which is the same car as the aygo just 10 percent cheaper. If you looking for the better built car the smart will always win easily.
The new smart looks way better then the old one but realistically talking they are different categories with the aygo being a four seater and the smart a two.

For the US market, Toyota could market this as the replacement to the Scion xA. They could then concentrate it’s marketing on young urbanites, and avoid competing against the Yaris. They should have no trouble selling a short wheelbase, 2000 pound coupe with 100 horsepower (this reminds me of the original MR2 and Honda CRX).
