This affects the electronic more than anything. I can see it now. You lose your radio and your wipers and your airbags wont work.

Does anyone remember those computers that had everything built-in to one unit, and if you lost monitor you lost your computer. At least until the monitor got replaced. What an awesome idea.. let's do that with cars.

I'm not convinced that cutting costs equates to reducing quality. I certainly don't think commonization of parts will lead to recalls. The way the LLN article is written suggests that Toyota is just making its component systems more efficient, and if the blustering can be believed, Toyota's previous plan saved billions.

This announcement is just one more example of Toyota's picture-perfect auto business model: full auto line, luxury variants, high volume sales models, niche hybrids and alternative fuels development, LOW costs, and mega profit. Just another slap in the face of others (U.S. Big 3) who continue to struggle.

Seriously guys, as someone in who owns businesses in the automotive industry the only way to make money now with the cut-throat competition is to cut unnecessary overhead. This of course usually translates to worse quality and so on but the key is to always keep it better than your competitor. If you suck, you need to make sure your rivals suck more. That's just the way it is, it's business afterall. Of course you can get out of that game and buy something custom as to ensure quality, like a new Ferrari...

And to add to the overall tone on this board: You will always hear about Toyota seeking to cut costs, even with record profits. It the whole notion of continuous improvement. Always moving forward and seeking out opportunities to improve upon. So to correct Lambo, this is the exact news you should want to hear from Toyota. Cutting cost does not automatically mean reducing quality.

Toyota launched a new quality oriented product development initiative in 2005. It is called Customer First. The first product to come from this initiative was the 08 Highlander. There has been talk that this has been the most trouble free launch of a vehicle ever for Toyota from a quality/warranty standpoint. That has included more prototypes instead of computer simulation, lengthening the time-periods between new models and having all of the chief engineers work double checked by other unrelated engineers within Toyota.

So I am confident that they've taken the steps necessary to correct whatever quality issues they may have had in the past.

This initiative is a perfect example where investing money in development can reduce the overall cost of selling a car over its lifetime. Quality goes up, cost goes down.

"The plan calls for multiple car components to be lumped into modules or systems"

Irrespective quality characteristics, what this suggest to me is yet one more step toward making the car very expensive to maintain, in the event one of the resident systems fails. Using VW as inspiration in this context is a bad omen.

I wonder what they are planning, but I still think if they are forcing their suppliers to a lower price point (ala Wal Mart) they will wind up with cheaper costs but lesser quality. Not that I'm complaining... I've always thought they sucked! ;)

Cost reduction and quality reduction does not necessarily coincide or ar least it does not have to happen. Quality can be improved by process optimization and the same goes for cost. Perhaps component assembly will put onus on the supplier and will give visibility into supplier adherence to quality process. It is shameful that Toyota dropped ball on quality so badly this year, perhaps it is disguised way out of this hole.

This isn't the type of news I want to be hearing regarding Toyota. The last thing they need right now is more cost cutting. I hope this doesn't effect quality too much, even though it inevitably will have some impact, and I sure as hell hope this doesn't increase the already present recall issue. Toyota shouldn't be making the same mistakes GM made..

Well done Toyota:=) To all Toyota/lexus hater. You guys need to go get a job instead of waisting time to keep write a stupid comments about LEXUS/Toyota. You have to admite please and stop hate and appreciate. Looking back 10 years ago how GM dominate the auto maker; therefore they don't care about the comsumer which lead them to make crapy car. Now with such competition (TOYOTA/LEXUS)in the auto market, they have no choice but to come up a better way to make their car better. If not then they would be out of business.
