The 2009 Tokyo Motor Show was shaping up to be a real bust – thanks to fall from General Motors, Chrysler, Ford, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen – but Toyota may be planning enough substantial reveals to make the October show as relevant as ever.
According to Edmunds, Toyota is planning to reveal two of its most highly-anticipated sports cars at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show – the Lexus LF-A and the yet-to-be-named sports coupe co-developed with Subaru.
Despite the economic downturn, the Lexus LF-A is reportedly still on schedule, which would support an October reveal at the Tokyo show. In fact, early reports suggested the LF-A could be ready in time for September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Although the 600+ horsepower LF-A will likely steal most of the spotlight on the Toyota stage, the unveiling of the Toyota/Subaru coupe would also make for some major headlines. The Toyota/Subaru joint-venture has been on again, off again over the last few months, with some reports suggesting the project had been suspended indefinitely. If the new sports coupe does indeed make a debut at October show, it remains possible that it could hit our shores sometime next year.
