Toyota ups hybrid prices in home market

08/25/2008, 10:09 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Toyota is raising prices across the board for hybrid models in Japan. Toyota blames rising steel and raw materials prices for the hike, which is about 3 percent on Toyota’s two gas-electric hybrids, the Prius and Harrier.

Next month, the base model Prius S will list for 2.38 million yen, or $22,000 – that’s up 73,500 yen. The Harrier Hybrid Premium S – sold in North America as the almost identical Lexus RX400h – goes up 136,500 yen to 4.76 million, or $43,000.

Price hikes between model years without a redesign are especially uncommon in Japan. Toyota has only raised prices in its home market between model years a handful of times in the last 30 years.

Here’s a funny joke that I hope the LLN editors will recognize as being “on topic” since it has to do with japs and money which this article is obviously about.

I had a bunch of Canadian dollars I needed to exchange, so I went to the currency exchange window at the local bank. Short line. Just one lady in front of me …. an Asian lady who was trying to exchange yen for dollars and she was a little irritated . . .

She asked the teller, ‘Why it change?? Yesterday, I get two hunat dolla of yen. Today I get hunat eighty?? Why it change?’ The teller shrugged his shoulders and said, ‘Fluctuations’. The Asian lady says, ‘Fluc you white people, too. .

That would have been a cute attempt at humor if you hadn’t labeled it “has to do with Japs” beforehand. That just made it a racial slur.

Yeah, also what a sad lie. That “joke” has been around for ages. You know you never leave your mom’s basement, HOMORR.

But to address the article, that is a legitimate reason to raise prices.
