Toyota workers get $10,000 bonuses; GM/Ford workers get $0

Some Asian automakers are showering U.S. plant workers with bonuses averaging up to $10,000 while Detroit’s two biggest carmakers have scrapped profit-sharing checks this year because of mounting automotive losses, reports the Detroit News. Toyota awarded each of its 5,600 hourly employees at its largest U.S. plant in Georgetown, Ky., an average of $10,131 for 2005. The plant builds the Camry, the best-selling car in the nation. Honda handed out an average $4,923 to 10,000 associates at its four major Ohio plants. Ford and GM both cut bonuses from $600, and $195 down to $0. Chrysler has yet to announce bonuses, but last year it gave an average of $1500.

“big three all the way” ???? Big three who? GM, Toyota, Ford? This year it will be Toyota, GM, Ford.

Don’t be so certain, Mookie. Chrysler is on track to beat Ford this year, and Toyota is still one step behind Chrysler.

I love Toyota, always drove em, however it would be good for GM and Ford to trim union power and start making cars we really want. I did just buy a new Corvette. I hope Ford and GM can pull themselves out!

Boy, some of you rednecks just don’t keep up on automotive news, do you. Chrysler is owned by Daimler, so theoretically Chrysler is no more a domestic brand than Toyota is. Toyota is currently #2 and poised to take over the #1 spot by 2007. Sorry boys, but the death of GM and Ford are just a heart beat away. I wouldn’t be surprised if Toyota doesn’t acquire GM by 2010, they have already started by purchasing Fuji Heavy Industries (engine supplier of the mighty Duramax Diesel) from GM. Yes, it’s hard to belive, but the mighty GM diesel engine is built by a jap company. Now crawl into your corners and cry.

I’m one of the reasons Toyota is able to pay bonuses. I’m on my 5th Toyota since 1974. The current one has over 216,000 miles. Never got a Big 3 vehicle to last like that. The last GM product I bought started wanting to be in the shop all the time after 50,000 miles. I have to drive a lot and don’t have time to own 2 cars just so I can own American . . . .

Toyotas are impressive, the only thing you have to maintain is the timing belt, however, with the new VQ engine’s produced by Nissan, i only change oil and now these engines will last longer than ever, no wonder the Japanese (Nissan) engine has won the award for last 10 years in a row. However, when it comes to loyalty to its customers and its employees, toyota is by far the best of all. Toyota does NOT lay off employees in 1000s like the GM and ford do, Toyota has No history of lying to its customers, Toyota does NOT have trucks that catch fire, or SUVS that have no center of gravity. Plus toyota camry may be more american made than anything out there in USA. So what is the most foreign made car made by Chevy. It is the corvette!!!! Don’t believe me, do some research on your own, and don’t be surprised if the word Germany pops up in your search over and over again.
American industry is doomed to failure, not because of their incompetency, but because of their greed for capitalistic gains via exploiting workers and their benefits while the Japanese industry respects its workers, their families, their futures and rewards them of their hard work. Loyalty cannot be bought, it has to be earned.

Once Toyota gets bigger they will have recalls like GM and Ford too, so do not give me that bullcrap, and I am nowhere near being a redneck, I am not even caucasian, yet I still support the american automakers strongly.

Let toyota pass up GM and Ford, im sick of stupid ford and GM fans thinking the Mustang and the corvette are the best cars in the world, there not, they friggin suck! toyota needs to boot out GM and Ford now! as for chrysler, or daimlerchrysler, there just sitting on the side line just minding there own business and selling good products. I think, within the next couple of years, toyota will kick GM and Ford’s ass and become #1, but daimlerchrysler will never go bankrupt and allways sell high quality products.

Discussion of “American business” itself is rather misleading. Do Americans own GM? Ford? Well, if the shareholders happen to be American they do, otherwise no. “American” cars are cars made and designed to maximize shareholder profit. That is all. Ford and GM etc. are not here to make America bigger, badder, and better. In fact if Ford announced tomorrow plans to do so they would be guilty of violating their corporate charter, which demands that their goal be the maximizing of shareholder wealth. The reality is, it behooves the wealthy elite to make the rest of us common folk think the issue is somehow an American issue, that it is in our best interest to buy American. Of course this is laughable and ironic, because the same businesses who ask us to buy American outscore their labor etc. to where they can get the most bang for the buck. But you and I as individual consumers are supposed to “Buy American” and pay more, for often an inferior product, because it is good for the nation. Just a wee bit hypocritical wouldn’t you say?
