Do Americans own GM? Ford? Well, if the shareholders happen to be American they do, otherwise no. "American" cars are cars made and designed to maximize shareholder profit. That is all. Ford and GM etc. are not here to make America bigger, badder, and better. In fact if Ford announced tomorrow plans to do so they would be guilty of violating their corporate charter, which demands that their goal be the maximizing of shareholder wealth. The reality is, it behooves the wealthy elite to make the rest of us common folk think the issue is somehow an American issue, that it is in our best interest to buy American. Of course this is laughable and ironic, because the same businesses who ask us to buy American outscore their labor etc. to where they can get the most bang for the buck. But you and I as individual consumers are supposed to "Buy American" and pay more, for often an inferior product, because it is good for the nation. Just a wee bit hypocritical wouldn't you say?
