New Toyota Supra details emerge

The chief engineer talks about what he expects from the new Supra.

New details about the upcoming Toyota Supra have surfaced from its appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

In an interview on the official blog of Toyota UK, chief engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed that "the Supra has an even lower centre of gravity, and its body rigidity is twice that of the [86]." He continued, ""It's actually the same level of rigidity as the Lexus LFA supercar, and it has been achieved without using carbon fibre so we could keep the price point at an affordable level," adding, "That was the most difficult thing to achieve."

Tada also said that it will have a shorter wheelbase than the 86, but a wider track. "The car was developed with a specific ratio of wheelbase and track in mind, and I think we've been able to achieve the balance that we were looking for,” he explained.

However, Tada also admitted that fans of past Supras may not fully accept it right away. "Thinking back to the introduction of the GT86, some owners of classic AE86 models were quite hard to please and were very critical of the new car. So it may be similar with this car."

Tada also states that it could very well be the last purely internal combustion sports car from Toyota, thanks to impending autonomous and electrification trends. In any case, he is adamant that it "will be the most fun-to-drive car in its class."
