Toyota shows 2019 Aygo compact ahead of Geneva

The A-segment hatchback gets a minor refresh.

Toyota has unveiled a refreshed Aygo compact ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.

If you haven't heard of the Aygo, that's probably because you don't live in Europe. It's an A-segment (compact) car that holds a 6.6 percent share of that market in the Olde World. Its most notable traits are probably its personalizable options and a large X-faced front.

That X has now been reshaped from a two-dimensional graphic to a three-dimensional sculpt, with new headlights sporting integrated daytime running lights. The "under-lamp ornamentation" is available in three colors, black, gloss black, or silver. Taillamps are now an LED squiggle reminiscent of the new Prius. Two new colors, magenta and blue, are now available, as are redesigned wheel covers and 15-inch alloys.

Under the hood, the 1.0-liter engine gets a slight power bump from 68 to 71 horsepower, but torque takes a one lb-ft hit from 70 to 69. Toyota says its 0-100 km (0-62 mph) time is 13.8 seconds. A longer fourth and fifth gear, improved counterbalance shafts, a new dual fuel injection system and higher compression ratios all contribute minor improvements to the drivetrain.

Estimated fuel economy improves slightly to 60 mpg. The Aygo will not come stateside, but the A-segment is an important class for crowded European cities. The production Aygo will be shown in full at the Geneva Motor Show.
