For those who have followed the symbiotic relationship that started in 2004 between Travis Pastrana and Subaru, today’s news may seem impossible to accept. But impossibilities aside, it is confirmed: Subaru has bid Pastrana farewell after nearly seven years as the company’s lead driver for Subaru Rally Team USA.
Pastrana’s time with Subaru was nothing short of amazing, resulting in an astonishing 150+ stage wins, 40 podium appearances and 22 event victories while piloting a vehicle adorned with a blue oval and silver stars on the front and rear. Among the victories was the impressive feat of capturing four consecutive Rally America National Championship titles from 2006 through 2009, cementing Pastrana in the history book as the youngest champion in history.
As if that wasn’t enough, Pastrana also brought significant exposure to Subaru by winning two gold, one silver and one bronze medal in the ESPN X Games while competing in the Rally Car Racing competitions.
Tim Mahoney, CMO of Subaru of America said, “Travis brought Rally to a whole new audience through the rally championship and of course through his spectacular appearances at X Games. We wholeheartedly thank him for his outstanding performances with Subaru Rally Team USA and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Pastrana to…NASCAR?
Crazier things have been suggested, attempted and accomplished, but some are suggesting that Pastrana may tap his vast youthful following by bringing them to the NASCAR scene. While having a radio interview with Speed Freaks, Pastrana mentioned that Waltrip racing (NASCAR team) would like him to try some racing in the Nationwide series next year – and an official announcement is scheduled for tomorrow.
Although Pastrana has never suggested significant interest in NASCAR, it is the logical progression for many top-tier drivers in America due to its high exposure and big sponsorship possibilities. Expect to see this rally driver behind the wheel of a… Toyota at an oval track near you.
