Trident readying Iceni diesel supercar

08/20/2008, 5:53 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although ‘diesel’ and ‘supercar’ are rarely used in the same sentence, the UK’s Trident Performance Vehicles is working on a car that could make that rarity a common occurrence.

Dubbed the Iceni, Trident’s diesel-powered supercar uses a modified version of General Motors’ Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel V8. In Iceni guise, the oil burner is good for 550 horsepower and an earth-wrinkling 950 lb-ft of torque from a low 1,800 rpm.

That massive output combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox means the Iceni is good for a sub-four second 0-60 run and a top speed in excess of 200 mph.

Despite its amazing performance, Trident says the Iceni will return more than 55 mpg! Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

But as with all good things, there is a catch. The Iceni isn’t quite ready for a market launch as Trident is still searching for more investors. But when the Iceni is ready to hit production, Trident predicts it will carry a price tag of £75,000. No word on if there are U.S. plans for the Iceni.

The styling……atrocious. I couldn’t stand to look at one. However, with the performance figures advertised I might not be able to when this thing flies by.

HAHA! The R10 Audi is a LeMans Prototype Premier 1 series car and costs well over 10 million dollars to make I would hardly compare this to that ktulu. Secondly what they have done here is taken a TVR and made it ugly and then shoehorn a god damn GM diesel truck engine in it! Where is the sense in any of this?

It looks VERY much like a TVR, but twisted. I’m not digging the exterior as much as a Tuscan, but I’m really liking this interior. Well, that is, I like the interior with the exception of those funky knobs/switches that look like hydraulics controllers.

that car is going to be heavy that motor is form a 3 quarter ton truck but that said that is a nice engine arguably the best motor gm makes i always said it would be really intresting to take an old chevelle and stick a duramax with an allison in it. my buddy has a one in his gmc it isn’t what you’d call fast off the line but is just has this pull to it that lets you know that you have alot of power going to the ground

It’s ugly, probably handles like ****, but for some reason want one. I guess, as others adverted to, it is the TVR knockoff (which is an oxymoron as TVR is an oxymoron) that it has going for it. 

It’s quite pleasing to my eyes. Whether it can handle or not is of little concern to me. I am more interested in the Engine. An example of performance and f/econ without compromise.

Does it have to be this ugly? Why is it there are so many wannabe supercar makers out there with such awful designs. It’s really not that hard to make a beautiful, or at least attractive car.

looks like a 1996 ford taurus had sex with a e-type that had sex with a dodge viper whose had sex with a tvr to get that interior that auto matic shifter knob looks straight off a 1980’s chevy automatic transmisson. it looks better in white . the gold one looks likes something gold member would drive. it looks tacky too if this is performance orinted it looks like a done up early fox mustang interior with the center. dash clock throw some leather sparco racing seat some analog gauges maybe some brushed aluminum. this things is supposed to be British right have a f-ing classy interior it looks like a 5th grader did the body work

The design pretty much screams “generic British supercar”…
The engine is also a good indication it’s made by the brits, they developed a crush for tractor engines recently and are buying them like hotcakes. I think they are pushing McLaren to put a diesel in their P12 :P
If you ask me, I would drop a LS in there, put a charger on top and get the same horsepower with less weight. Yeah, not too much “torqs”, but plenty of revs to make up for it!
I guess using a gas Vee8 wouldn’t make this a “diesel supercar”, so I guess the truck engine is just a marketing tool.

I get the feeling that they’ll be looking for those investors for quite some time yet. Even the least car-savvy venture capitalist will know that an ugly sports car is doomed to failure, unless you own the copyright to some prancing horse badges that you can put on the nose.

I like the front, not the back so much. Why not toss the Duramax and drop in a Detroit Diesel DD15? 560hp! 1850 lb ft torque! 14.8L! It would shred this car if you turned the key!

Monkey, maybe that’s EXACTLY why they didn’t use the DD15. I don’t think anyone wants their car shredded.

I’m not a fan of the exterior, but the interior and performance sounds awesome. I seriously doubt it will return 50 miles to the gallon, maybe 25 at the most.

jay, my dad’s 3-ton 2500HD returns 25mpg with the Dmax while highway cruising. It AVERAGES 18mpg and he regularly tows at the weight limit which is somewhere around 7 tons. Something to think about.

how the hell did they get a performance tuned duramax to A. return 55mpg, and B. not weigh down the front of the car so much that the back wheels lift off the ground?

C6Racer- That’s amazing. The Dmax engines are great engines. I’ve read of people averaging a good 20 miles to the gallon with them, but with personal experience I’ve achieved anywhere from 12 to 20. Even if this car was to double those figures, I doubt it would return 50 miles to the gallon. We’ll just have to see.

Instead of building their own frame, they should partner with a more established chassis expert like McLaren or Lotus. As for the U.S. market, perhaps Chevy could offer a limited run of this engine in the Corvette.
