Trouble ahead? Fiat ranks last in latest J.D. Power survey

05/05/2009, 2:25 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although the J.D. Power and Associates survey is not the end all, be all of actual automotive quality, it is a fairly good indicator. As such, the latest news doesn’t bode well for Chrysler with Fiat placing dead last in J.D. Power’s survey of UK vehicles.

According to the latest J.D. Power and Associates survey of vehicles in the United Kingdom, Fiat placed last in customer satisfaction. Fiat took the 28th spot out of 28 nameplates, sharing the bottom five with Citroen, Kia, Chevrolet and Mitsubishi.

The news isn’t good for Chrysler as it is looking to Fiat to improve its overall image. Chrysler’s vehicle quality has been bemoaned for the last several years, with Fiat’s reputation in the U.S. not much better. Fiat’s poor quality was one of the factors that originally forced the Italian automaker off our shores.

It remains to be seen if Fiat’s low J.D. Power scores will translate over into U.S. models, but there is still time to improve the quality of U.S.-bound vehicles. The first products of the Chrysler-Fiat alliance aren’t expected to hit the U.S. market for another 18 months. Chrysler inked a strategic alliance with Fiat on April 30th.

Strada was reliable; it was based on 125. 124 spider was a piece of mechanical work, but handled better then 2002.

No surprise here. This is the reason Fiat left this market. Italian cars are like Italian woman. Nice to look at, fun to play with, but don’t marry one.

Um I think Fiat if the deal goes through should not be thinking of their line up here but Chrysler Domestic lineup and how to stay with better quality with the Cars and Trucks Chrysler produces here. They can think about bringing the Punta here after their image is clean up and the Domestic Products for 2010 and 2011 are under way.

As nice as that would be, that’s probably the last thing that will happen. It sounds like their interest in Chrysler was for their dealer networks so Fiat could start selling cars here again without having a build a new dealer network.

When you consider that the UK probably has names like Tata and Proton and Lada on the streets this says more than I need to know about Fiat.

I’ll stick with Ford or a few asian makes, thanks.

Fiat has been gone a long time. Now, in all fainess maybe things are better. I don’t like to generalize, When Mercedas bought Chrysler. I thought with their engineering excellence, product qualiry would go up. Instead the quality of MB’s products went down. I had a Alfa Romeo. I loved it, when it was running.. The Jeep brand has value. I suggest that Roger Penske buy Saturn from GM and Jeep from Chrysler and develop a quality american car compamy with two nameplates that still have a very high name recognition.

“According to the latest J.D. Power and Associates survey of vehicles in the United Kingdom, Fiat placed last in customer satisfaction” – LLN

Wait a minute, the report said “last in CUSTOMER SATISFACTION,” that could include things like dealership service experience and not all about “poor quality.” LLN, please don’t jump to conclusion without giving us the foundation of your conclusion. For what it’s worth, Fiat could have been the most well built cars in the UK, but with such arrogant dealership to land at #28.
