Two Detroit-area Lincoln-Mercury dealers set to go to court over false letter

08/19/2008, 7:13 PM

By Drew Johnson

Although most new car dealerships run reputable operations, there are a few that ruin it for everyone. Star Lincoln-Mercury of suburban Detroit would definitely fall into the latter category. Star mailed out several letters to the clients of its main competitor – Varsity Lincoln-Mercury – stating that Varsity was going out of business and promoted its own services.

Star’s pathetic plan to drum up a few extra sales completely backfired and Star is now facing a lawsuit filed by Varsity – which coincidently outsold every other Lincoln-Mercury dealer in the nation between 1997 and 2007.

Star has since sent out letters retracting its statement, but Varsity is moving forward with its lawsuit, which is seeking $25,000 for damages plus interest, costs and attorney fees, according to Automotive News.

Star owner Hoot McInerney recognizes that his dealership “goofed up” and holds no hard feelings against Varsity for moving forward with the lawsuit.

The letter that should have gone out instead is this: “Due to lack of consumer interest (and rightfully so), the entire Lincoln-Mercury division has been cancelled.”

OK, was the letter more of a joke or this Star send a legitimate letter telling Varsity’s customers a lie? Is so $25000 seem like too small an amount for someone trying to thwart a million dollar dealership. Especially since it’s another big dealer. I’m not too lawsuit happy ,but suing the pants off of Star Lincoln-Mecury would be justified.

No, honor amongst thieves uh?

Look how low Mercury dealers have to go to sell a car. IT’s beyond pathetic. Mercury is a hollow joke of a company, the afterbirth of Ford which is itself a joke.

Why not just let people comment? Why erase all the comments that were already here? I think everyone here, except cracker and deanster, are old enough for what goes on here. Quit acting like a bunch of whiney little girls already, it’s just a message board, don’t get your panties in a wad. Geez.

This is just flat out STUPID and FUNNY. But why only $25K, I would have seeked for more damages.

As for the message board, I don’t recall seeing any rules and/or regulation when posting, nor anything in my account confirmation email from LLN. If there are rules, show me and I’ll be glad to follow! Until then, it’s just a message board, relax and let people say what they want.
