Although most new car dealerships run reputable operations, there are a few that ruin it for everyone. Star Lincoln -Mercury of suburban Detroit would definitely fall into the latter category. Star mailed out several letters to the clients of its main competitor – Varsity Lincoln-Mercury – stating that Varsity was going out of business and promoted its own services.
Star’s pathetic plan to drum up a few extra sales completely backfired and Star is now facing a lawsuit filed by Varsity – which coincidently outsold every other Lincoln-Mercury dealer in the nation between 1997 and 2007.

Star has since sent out letters retracting its statement, but Varsity is moving forward with its lawsuit, which is seeking $25,000 for damages plus interest, costs and attorney fees, according to Automotive News.

Star owner Hoot McInerney recognizes that his dealership “goofed up†and holds no hard feelings against Varsity for moving forward with the lawsuit.
