Although India’s Mahindra & Mahindra is not interested in acquiring General Motors’ Hummer brand, the Detroit automaker has reportedly garnered some interest for its SUV brand from the Gulf Arab region. The Hummer brand has been up for ‘strategic review’ since gas topped $4 earlier this year.
General Motors Middle East Managing Director Terry Johnsson revealed on Tuesday that at least two investors in the region were interested in purchasing the Hummer brand. “For sure, there has been interest from various parties within the Gulf … there is a precedent in the cases of Aston Martin , Ferrari or Daimler and those kinds of solutions could be very realistic solutions,” he told Automotive News.
However, Johnsson also said that it is not a “foregone conclusion” that GM will part ways with its Hummer brand. GM’s only likely holdup for not selling the brand would be a low ball offer. But with Hummer now serving as the poster child for poor fuel economy, GM might have to start tempering its expectations to get the marque out the door.
