The way I see it, they should have kept the money in America and limited the rebate going to Japanese automakers. Sorry, but I don't listen to the global order bs, and how we're imposing on the Japanese's sales in America when their taxes on our vehicles are huge in Japan.

Dr. Fill.... check manufacterers official releases. I was even off by a few because of revised numbers, GM sold 189,443, Toyota 174,872, Ford 165,279. (Technically Prius is not doing any better than last year, #16 in sales - down 29.5% through July)

Unfortunately as of today, Corolla is now outselling Focus in Cash for Clunkers. I'm sure the Japanese are thrilled their profits are coming from people that don't even buy their cars (you and I, and the rest of American tax payers...and our kids....and their kids).

Found a study out of the Univ. of Michigan that showed buying more fuel efficient cars doesn't exactly mean oil consumption goes down, and a lot of times has the opposite effect. The savings from fuel economy is either used to drive more, or to purchase more items which require petroleum.

Maybe we should start a "cash for clowns" and trade in Congressmen...Republicans and Democrats. Lets face it, some have been around way too long, waisted more gas, and spewed too much smoke.

"Id say the net-net here is that alot of Big 3 Detroit vehicles got dumped for a long list of Japanese branded products. No surprise there."

Did you not read the article?

*sigh*

And I love the Ford focus too. I'd love to get a hatch SVT focus. That would be a blast to drive around town for my dd. The Mustang's gas mileage isn't anything to brag about.

The focus has been taking away sales from Honda/Toyota for years now. And so it should. It's a well made car.

I just have to say "wow" to all of these comments, and to the completely expected results of the CARS program. I'm glad that the Focus was the #1 car for this program, at least for a while, but in the end, people are going to go with what they know will work for years to come.

Unfortunately, the Big-3 have put themselves in a hole with the American market (save you a few people who still think buying American will truly and completely save America). Ford is the only one to really put forth a positive effort with minimal government support (compared to GM & Chrysler). That is why I'm glad to see them with a car in the top 5.

My biggest nitpick with this crap is that I would truly love to purchase a new car. I pay my taxes, just like almost everyone else, and feel I should have had the opportunity to purchase a new car as well. Just because a car doesn't get a combined 18mpg or worse, doesn't mean it isn't worthy of a trade. As many have said before, I love getting punished for driving a fuel efficient car for years.

Oh, a few more points:
sharpie wins over chevyman6 (This is obvious as chevyman has no good argument. Moreover, you said he turned it around on you? He took what you said, and just put what it means. This is hardly turning it around on you)

German cars & drivers are better (for the most part). American drivers may be able to drive fast in their eyes, but until they grasp the fact that they must signal to turn, I have no respect for most of them.

Please, people, learn how the full capabilities of the English language. Hell, at least learn the basic principles before you type here! (I know, this is a request that will NEVER be answered)

DR Fill, actually you're in error too. GM was number 1 in sales in July

July 2009 Total Sales:

GM 188,730
Toyota 174,872
Ford 164,818

If trends continue, Toyota will slide to number 3 shortly.

^^ "But that’s not what people want to drive." - You have any proof to back that up? I see tons of compact cars on the top 10 most purchased car list. No one is forcing you to trade your gas guzzler in.

"Too bad the presidents limo only get 14 mpg" - The president limo probably weighs as much as an armor vehicle given its protection. You want a car that gets worse than 14mpg, by all mean, have one. But that doesn't mean people need to follow you and keep their clunkers.

"We need a gear head to handle the auto industries problems." - Since when did we have a gear head for president?

"He really doesn’t know what hes doing." - Sure, if it wasn't for him, you would have the Big 1 - Ford by now, with the other companies divided up by creditors.

"I really regret voting for obama." - It's water under the bridge, but I seriously doubt you voted for him anyway.

This is horrible. The cash for clunkers program is hurting the big 3 even more. This program was made to stimulate new car sales and get older (and better than today's) gas guzzlers off the road because the government wants to go green. Too bad the presidents limo only get 14 mpg and they want us to drive fuel efficient cars. But that's not what people want to drive. I really regret voting for obama. He really doesn't know what hes doing. We need a gear head to handle the auto industries problems. Instead of destroying good cars to help the new cars sales and hurt th used car market. Even scrap yards are getting screwed over by this program because they can't salvage anything it all has to be scrapped.

4ever
He is in error
Toyota hasn't lost 500million since CARS program started
Program has been in effect a matter of 2-3 weeks
Toyota was #1 in US in sales for July
Camry, Prius and Corolla are 3 of the Top 6 selling cars in CARS program

Give Ford some private loans, and the uneducated think they are actually worth something
What a load!

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - [...] Toyota's Corolla sedan overtook the Ford Focus as the best-selling vehicle in the 'clunker' program. Toyota had two other passenger cars, the Prius hybrid and the Camry, in the top five. The Honda Motor Co Civic was No. 3.

Vehicles made by U.S. manufacturers accounted for all of the top 10 traded-in vehicles, which is to be expected since rebate terms require the older model get no more than 18 miles per gallon in most cases.

The 'clunker' group included five light truck models made by Ford. The list also included three Jeep and Dodge brands made by Chrysler and two GM Chevy models."

Jake you COULD compare just about any car to another and over here all Golf/A3/Focus types are lumped into one group as everywhere in the world. What separates an A3 from a Golf is quality and name, if that justifies the price? I won't answer that.

Bosley, I'd ask how many of these purchases impact American taxpayers in a positive manner? That's what truly matters, don't narrow your scope while in a global market. As much as I too believe that US taxpayer money should be spent to further US taxpayer's interests, that doesn't always mean taxpayer money should be spent on US taxpayers. (Yes I do fill out a 1040 every year as well even though I live and work in Germany for a german company.)

RS5 - Are you aware the A3 is the same thing as an upscale GTI? I'm not saying the A3 is worse, but it's a ripoff to me.

Creative Services for a television station. I write, direct, shoot and edit commercials and promos, and some special event shows. I used to produce a weekly variety show, which often included trips to the race track and a few visits to the Shelby factory (also at the race track), among other fun things like concerts and shows and such. But since money has been tight, we couldn't justify the expense for the show, and it got cancelled. Now it's just commercials and promos and events.

I know it's not the best song in the world, but here's a music video I produced years ago:

Audi RS5, I'm with you on this. And I read that like 98% or so of American drivers that take their test in Germany fail it the first time. That's kinda funny if you ask me. It's true though, Opel makes a very solid car, GM has had some garbage these past 10 years or so. Still waiting to get my B8 though, money is tight :(

RS5 mentioned that in an earlier thread - what a job! I don't know if I'd prefer his job or what I do now, but I hardly call that a job. Combining our jobs is even better though, just too bad I don't do the show I used to do anymore.

We have been and still are in the black carmaster, we haven't even slipped a toe into the red yet. Considering Ford's losses I'd say the overall picture is a bit rosier for us. I'm not bashing Ford and I'm glad to hear them getting back on their feet and I'm sure there might be a few companies that have even stronger numbers then Audi over the past year, but we've continually outsold ourselves every year for the past 11 years.

Nah, it's more like Opel able to hold its own and having to fork money to GM to help keep them over water. (Opel=Audi, GM=VW in this example only)
