General Motors’ UAW woes continue as three UAW locals filed five-day strike notices on Friday. The threatened strikes are over local issues and do not involve the national contract negotiated with GM last year. The notice is basically informing GM that workers at individual plants will strike if their needs are not addressed within five days.
According to Automotive News, UAW locals representing workers at GM’s Arlington, Texas; Delta Township, Michigan and Parma, Ohio facilities filed the five-day notice.
GM failed to comment on the specifics of the notices, but the Detroit-based automaker did say that most local issues involve absenteeism and work rules.
GM’s Arlington, Texas plant produces the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Although GM’s large SUVs are typically its biggest profit earners, sales have been down due to rising fuel prices.
GM’s Delta Township plant produces the GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and Buick Enclave – whose sales have been strong despite a slumping economy. The Acadia is the hottest of the three Lambdas, with sales up 29.4 percent in March.
GM’s Parma, Ohio plant is a metal stamping facility.
Over the last few weeks, GM has been forced to close over 30 plants — including seven light-duty truck plants and one passenger car plant — because of a UAW strike at American Axle.
