Deanster is right in that it generally takes education to make the really big bucks. Problem with autoworkers is that in most cases their skills are not portable. Problem with the rich is their egos tend to rise proportionally with their salaries.

All I have to say is good! Strike ! Even if these Gm’s are selling (which they have plenty on the lots) they are not doing their job as far as taking import buyers to switch
I have been seeing Malibu’s but not nearly as much as I see the new Accord.I was on vacation in NY and I went to the Auto show. I got in one and its not better than a Camry and not ,nearly as good as the Accord. I havent driven one yet but a friend of mine has a rental Malibu (which is what its meant for anyway) and he likes it but I asked him would he trade his Camry in for it and he replied ‘ Uhh NO” LOL
Keep in mind this guy used to buy GMs in the 80′s and early 90′s before he woke up and realized the Japanese had superior more reliable products

400horseSS, you might do some “real work” but, really it’s not worth $50 an hour, and that’s becoming more and more apparent. The UAW served it’s purpose in the 30′s, but sadly, they’ve demanded themselves into a huge hole. If you want America to be like the union-run EU, then that’s fine, but you will be out of work along with 10% of the rest of the population, paying 60% of your wages in taxes, and paying $9/gl for gas. That’s just the way it is in today’s world where just about anything can be built anywhere by anybody. Factory work these days, especially in a modern factory where robots & conveyers do all the heavy lifting is really only worth about $15/hr in wage & benefits, maybe $20 at most. How can anyone justify a PhD in engineering making less money than a guy mopping the floor in the factory? To anyone with half a brain, it makes no sense at all, but that’s what goes on in the Detroit 3. The executives making the money now all had to endure seeing HS dropouts making as much or more money than they for most of their career, and now they are getting their revenge. Not saying it’s right, but it is what it is. I’ve worked with several upper-management types in Detroit, and believe me the resentment toward the union pricks is deeeep. They are the decision-makers. They are the ones who can determine where components come from. The union’s days are numbered if they don’t wise up and realize that they are not as important as they think they are. I know for a fact that every Det3 is trying to find a way to shut down each and every NA plant, and they are all hoping they can last the 20 or so years it will take to do that. Every time one of these silly little strikes happens, it just adds more fuel to the fire.

BTW- us “professional pussies” have the option to buy the cars you do “real work” on, or cars from anywhere else in the world…so I’d be careful not to shit where you eat, pal.

400SS: Not sure what your beef is with me, but I know that this is actual real work that goes on in these factories. I think there are many people here who are jealous of the implied “manliness” of blue collar work, and would be more comfortable if auto workers were outsourced.

I say management should have, when times were good, made stock concessions to the UAW, therefore aligning the interests of the two sides.

autonut – I would agree that GM has more than enough inventory of the full-size SUVs, but definitely doesn’t have enough of the Lambdas. Lambdas (along with Malibu, CTS, G8, etc are all products that cannot be kept on the lots – like I said, imagine if the Camry plant workers go on strike, it’s different than if the Tundra plant goes on strike where demand is low)

To me this looks more like a class struggle. When unions were originally formed, college educated people were rare. Unions were a way for ‘everyman’ to get respect and be treated fairly for a solid middle-class wage, while the wives stayed home and raised the kids. The middle class in America is a much different group today. There are two people working two jobs to earn the same effective wage, and both are college educated. If you don’t fit this mold, you will be left behind in the lower class. Data shows union membership at an all-time low. Sad, but a sign of the times. The American dream is not gone, but it has a new face. The fair wage for simple, repetitive work, requiring no education, will get lower and lower. Foreign countries have millions of these people to compete with us.
