UAW refuses mediator in American Axle talks

04/14/2008, 8:52 AM

By paulee

In the latest update in the ongoing American Axle strike which is crippling GM’s production, the UAW refused an offer to bring in a federal mediator to help the two sides reach an agreement, American Axle said on Sunday. Axle workers have been on picket lines since February 26, disputing proposed wage and benefit cuts that Axle owners say are necessary in order to be competitive with other auto parts suppliers.

The talks resumed last Wednesday after a near one-month suspension, and continued on into the weekend, according to Automotive News. Axle representatives expressed their disappointment with the UAW’s refusal, who concluded bringing in a Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service mediator would be unhelpful this far into talks.

“In fact, it would place the mediator in a no-win situation,” said UAW President Ron Gettelfinger in a statement, after conversations with the mediator service representative.

Last week, Axle workers rejected a UAW offer. Industry analysts believe GM will have to step in soon, as its sales will soon be affected once it runs out of American Axle-made rear knuckles for its Pontiac G6 and Chevrolet Malibu sedans.

Gotta agree with the other posters, who ever said you should be able to make more money than the market can support. If you charge more than the other guys your business won’t last long. Now if a judge is smart enough to allow GM to go to another source while AA is on strike we might see some movement to settle but otherwise I think it will be another company down the crapper thanks to the UAW.

Proud to own a UAW-built Suburban. I’m proud that I helped support a man earning a wage he can live off of. You all act like these line workers should be paid $7/hr or something.

@DeansterTJ,
Has your ignorant ass ever tried to work on a car? Ever rebuild an engine or transmission? Ever swap a motor? Its not easy and requires specialized skills. I’ve rebuilt engines only to watch them blow a rod immediately upon the first startup because I did something wrong. A vehicle is an extremely complex piece of mechanical and electrical engineering. Guys who go to be mechanics have to get specialized training and there are college education programs for automotive maintenance. You can get a degree in being an automotive electrical engineer.

The real victim here is General Motors. They have a hot selling sedan and this is going to cut into what should be Apex sales for it. I’m sure many prospective Malibu buyers will want one, go to the Chevy dealer with every intent of buying and then be turned off when there’s none available.

Also some advice for GM, stop all G6 production and put the parts to use in Malibu production. Unless of course the two aren’t interchangeable, but I’d assume they would be.

If I ruled the world I would make the union folks all read something deeper than “Star” or “O” magazine. They don’t have a clue what is happening in the world or in their own industry or just don’t give a ****. Well here’s the news to the geniuses: The U.S. auto industry is in a dog fight to survive and it won’t get easier. So the lean and tough will make it and the slow and dumb won’t. And I don’t care that some at the top make a lot of money – that’s true in every business. That’s free enterprise. The industry as a whole has to face a new way of producing the product and if they want the jobs to stay home (anywhere in the U.S.) then they all have to get on board and get with the program. And just like any other industry – if they don’t like it, get another job.

Autoworkers are skilled and work hard (productivity for Ford/GM has gone up). One way to look at this is that the UAW no longer has a monopoly on this skill as there are now plenty of skilled autoworkers around the world. The UAW is banking on GM coming in and forcing AA’s hand. With the market contracting the way it has been, I think GM and AA can wait them out.

While I am not in favor of “check-card” voting (someone explain why Dems belive this is more fair than anonymous voting), our “free trade” agreements are not really all that “free”. A smart politician’s position would be to say we have absolute free trade, however, whatever tariffs or restrictions a country has on our goods, we will have the same reciprocal policies. That way we don’t get penalized and continue our free trade stance.

I don’t give a **** how hard it is to put an engine together. IT’s also hard to wait tables at a busy resto-bar, ever try doing that for an 8 hour shift? How about dealing with patients who are always threatening to sue, or how about driving a ****ing cab. What about nurses, stuck at $30 an hour with minimal benefits?

The reason the two groups (union, everyone else) is locking horns is because there is a DIFFERENCE IN OPINION as to what they’re worth. Ergo, they’re not necessarily worth what they’re offering to the Auto companies.

I’m not sure why the UAW turned out mediation from a US judge. Last time I checked, judges generally are impartial and understand the law better than any one of us. While striking is a right held by unions (provided they are legal), it has to be carefully used … especially in this day and age of outsourcing.

While I have very strong viewpoints of unions, I think they are necessary to protect the ‘little guy’. In this case, this is where things become very murky. Neither side is going to get all the concessions they are demanding — a compromise has to be made. Right now, GM is losing billions by the delays in production due to this strike. GM (and the other domestics) are hurting. Wouldn’t the union be ’smart’ and find a happy medium somewhere now? A lot of bad blood will remain after this strike is over … but more importantly, 1000s of jobs are on the line here. It would be awful if a big chunk of the jobs went elsewhere putting more people out of work and making the economy that much worse off …

This outsourcing bullsh!t is bleeding the economy dry and f*ckers like the UAW are at least partly responsible. They have an all-or-nothing mentality, but this is a dangerous sentiment as it could mean everyone will be out of a job sooner or later. Something has got to be done about these issues but apparently there are too many incompetents in Washington unable/unwilling to move a muscle to help the industry.

I sincerely hope, for America’s sake, that the next administration will do, whatever it takes, to right these wrongs and bring those lost jobs back where they belong.

I graduated college in 2005, I started working as an engineer in a manufacturing company that supplied front and rear subframes for Nissan. The line workers DON’T DO ****. All they do is take a few parts out of a basket, throw them on a jig, then hit a button and let the welding robots that I PROGRAMMED, using the PLC logic that I WROTE, using the jig to build the part that I DESIGNED AND TESTED NIGHT AFTER NIGHT while they were asleep in their beds at 1AM in the morning and I was working a 16 hr shift to meet these ridiculous auto companies deadlines AND making much less than $30 an hour. Give me a break, 50K a year to put a few parts on and hit a button??? Thank God I got my year of experience in and I have a new engineering job where I don’t have to listen to stupid complaints and comments from these “assembly” workers and make better money. And as for Frylock 350, what kind of dumbass rebuilds an engine and it blows up on the first start? It isn’t hard to build a car, as long as you have the TIME, MONEY and TOOLS, which these so called line workers have time, since it’s their job, the money is supplied by the company, and the tools are already programmed to do the hard ****. Don’t try and act like your something your not, face it, the UAW are a bunch of pains in the asses and YOU would be better with out them. So, I’m a little confused here. American Axle is offering to pay their workers $20 to $30 an hr, and the UAW is asking for around $40 to $50. More or less, I’m concerned why American Axle doesn’t simply fire the UAW workers who don’t want to work for $20 to $30 dollars an hour, which is really good I’d say personally. Is it because of some discrimination law, the whole workforce is unionized in the immediate area, or what?

What even brings up a bigger question though, is what’s running through the heads of the UAW? Obviously they are there to protect the worker, but it’s pretty obvious that from every corner of the globe, they’ve been under criticism.
