The United Auto Workers union is asking its members for a strike authorization vote. “It is the vote by the membership to authorize senior leadership to strike if they see it as a necessary step,” said UAW spokesman Paul Krell. UAW has said Delphi workers will likely strike if the embattled auto parts supplier succeeds in canceling its union contracts — an apparent eventuality that draws nearer each day. If Delphi strikes, most analysts believe production at General Motors will slow to a crawl. “A work stoppage that shuts down GM’s North American operations would result in cash burn of around $5 billion per month,â€? JP Morgan analyst Himanshu Patel wrote in a research note in February. “The working capital outflow could begin to diminish after the first month, but GM’s desire/ability to sustain a strike beyond a month seems low.â€?
