The United Auto Workers union isn’t a normal staple of the annual Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Michigan — having skipped the event for more than a decade — but newly-elected UAW president Bob King took to the stage today to announce that the union will be seeking free elections from transplant automakers.
Looking to expand the UAW’s presence to foreign automakers with U.S. production operations, King announced that the UAW will be seeking free and fair elections at transplant factories in an effort to unionize workers. King wants factory workers to have the choice to join the UAW without pressure from company management.
“If employers don’t live up to the principles and try to threaten and harass workers, then we’re going to be very aggressive in exposing that to the American public,” King said after his speech.
When asked if the UAW would be satisfied if plant workers defeated unionization if a free election, King said: “Yes.”
King has already butted heads with Toyota during his short tenure, calling for protests at 52 Toyota dealerships in California.
